Bathtub valve stems removal

Hi all, I have some old Kohler (probably 1960s) bathtub faucet hdwe in my home and one is leaking right now. The last time this happened, I invited some plumbers into my house to fix the leaks in both tubs and fix some other things.

Please see the pic. I removed the knob from the offending valve. A screw holds the knob to the end of the stem. I should have watched these guys that were in my house more closely, and I missed the part where they removed these stems. Do I need a special wrench? If so, do I go to a plumbing supply store for the wrench and stems/washers? Are there replaceable seats in these things? Either way, do I try to smooth the seats with some sort of tool?

I have two sets of these things so I need to know how to fix them.

The plumbers that I had in my house installed the wrong stems and had to come back for that and, worse, they cracked my tile wall and did not say anything about it. I am not enthusiastic about inviting people in again for minor fixes.

Thanks for reading!
