Tile/granite/slate flush hearth options for fireplace - help?
Comments (3)Yes you should be able to get it...we got a one piece marble (same slab used in the surround) and it sits flush with the flooring. If it can't be done for whatever reason, then you should be able to get a carpenter to make a wooden bevel to match your flooring as a transition piece so you won't trip or whack your toes. We have slate flooring under our wood stove and the mason put a bevel on the edge of the slate to prevent just that....See MoreShow me your tile or granite fireplace surround!!
Comments (19)Wow-I am amazed that you remember names like that mom2reese! It is Lunada Bay Sumi-e but ZUSHI Natural. I picked it out from a small card sample and there were no blues on it so I was taken aback when I first saw the real thing. But I like it and I have that blue in my room luckily. I am not sure it goes so great with the granite hearth which was a remnant slab, dark brown with reddish/copper but I think the copper grout should help with that. We had to order some more is why we stopped here! Now I am thinking about going up to the mantle bottom and then maybe a band of 2 or 3 around the top of the mantle rather than the whole shebang. I would love to have something that sparkly for backsplash, will be looking at those again....See MoreHow Much For a Granite Fireplace Surround- Need Advice ASAP
Comments (8)I'm a little confused. Your drawing says tile but your post says slab. Did you change plans from tile to slab after the drawing? Also, your drawing shows a dimension of 5'2" across the bottom which equals 62", but that appears to cover columns plus surround width of 6" + 44" + 6" which equals 46". Granite fabrication pricing can vary a lot depending on where you are and also from fabricator to fabricator. Are there any edge details or such that cause extra fabrication time? Our fireplace surround is very similar in size. The material for the surround is left over from our kitchen remodel and we bought a small slab for our hearth. Our quote is just labor - $600 for fab and installation. It is very simple - no fancy edges. 8" wide, but that probably doesn't make much difference to the quote. Ours is also taller - 54" - and a bit wider - 52". Our surround is being fabbed as 3 rectangular pieces - a top and 2 sides because of the size of our remnants. A fabricator might charge more to fab and install a similar surround as one piece. There would be more chance of breakage I think and it might take an extra installer to handle the weight of the surround. I think that it would have cost more if we used the fabricator who did our kitchen....See MoreStone, ceramic or slate surround?
