Have you checked your spam folder for the e-mails?

When you're logging in with your old password are you using the number pad numbers? If so, is that your norm? Is the number lock on? The number lock off could make you short of characters.

It sometimes helps at other sites to type out the password elsewhere, check it very carefully, then copy and paste it into the login screen. Also try using a different device.

They're probably mostly clueless about the website, but might have a tech help number or something for you. If they're too clueless, ask for a supervisor.

Thanks, Pillog. I have checked my junk mail. I think they are just not sending out the email telling me how to reset. I filled out the help form. The response was not the usual "we'll get back to you soon". It was a link to their help page with the form I'd just filled out.

My password was just five letters. The site said it had to be at least six.

I will try the magazine phone number, thanks for that. Maybe Monday would be a better day.

The thing is, the automated system is probably sending the e-mail, but it sounds like maybe your login record has been corrupted so it's not going to the correct e-mail address, or something like that. Unfortunately, the recursion back to the help page, while it could just be a stupid coding error, could also indicate real troubles over there. If they can just get you back into your account so you can get your recipes out, it'll be a win.

Is there any chance you used a different e-mail address with your login than where you receive the newsletters?

I'm surprised that your password was five letters. That's very unusual. They went from four to six to eight. Something to try, just for grins, is to try your password with a blank space at the end, with an underscore at the end, and with a zero at the end.

I have a problem with a site because it still has an old, cancelled email listed, but I can't get in to change it because I have to be able to get the email they send to my old email address.

I'm sorry this is happening and I don't have anything helpful to try, but I know that when I use my Hotmail address (which I use for most online purposes so I don't have to give out my main address) it NEVER delivers the auto messages to help me get into accounts from websites (such as changing passwords, etc.) They don't go to junk mail folder, either, they just disappear. It's a real problem, so I finally opened a gmail account and I do get those emails to that address with no problems.

Oh! That's another thing to try--thanks Olychick! If you have a whitelist, or list of approved e-mail addresses to deliver to your inbox, you could try adding Epicurious. There might be a filter that doesn't recognize the password reset messages but doesn't mind the newsletters.

I can't stress enough the value of talking to a human being. If you can get someone in technical support, they really can fix this kind of problem.

It is an old email address. I do get the daily recipe emails though. And I sent myself a test email. Olychick, it's interesting that those automatic ones don't get to you at Hotmail. There's no way around it though, because the change-the-password request identifies me by the email address. I think.

The password was from many years ago. I've been wondering if I changed it and forgot, but I'm pretty good about keeping track of passwords.

They may be having real trouble. A woman commented on Chowhound 4 days ago that she got the password change thing but still could not get the site to let her in.

I need to deal with an actual person. I said how can they be so unhelpful, and my husband said, "You are not the customer." True. It's all about tracking our information.

Lesson learned.... so much for the highly praised "cloud". Your family photos? Oops, how many photo sites have dumped you? Personally, I'm keeping my mother's index card recipes. I still buy cookbooks. And I have boxes of photos. At least keep a backup in a different form. But to put your reliance on the cloud is to hang your memories on a slender thread.... one day it will break.

Oh, I wouldn't store my own stuff on a web site. These are Epicurious recipes I have saved on their site, and I would like not to lose access to. I imported some of them to a recipe program but then it stopped working and I just never finished grabbing them.

If I could do this, I could at least grab the recipes. I don't see a way, and thought maybe one appears if you're signed in. I asked my daughter to try, and she can't find a way either.

Sigh. I think they've abandoned their website. The registration screen does the same recursive thing that the help screen does.

Meantime, I've tried all the backchannel searches that go around the whole login structure that I know (admittedly, I'm no expert but I've had some success on other things). That didn't work either.

I think the live tech is the only thing that will work, if that even does. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Thank you so much for trying. My plan now is to dig out a backup drive (not as recently backed up as it should be) and start the computer from it. The cookie should still be there. I don't have time to work on it now, though, so I hope when I do the website is still functional. It really is a mess.

I advise anyone who has a questionable old email address still in use by a site you need to go in right now and change it. Funny I still get tons of junk mail to that address but not the one I need.

Hooray! I'm back in. The backup drive had the browser cookie. I copied the list of my recipes as insurance, then changed my email address. When I went back to the current drive, the email to change my password was there. Great!
