What Bug is Killing Our Elephant Ear (and Remedy)

We were given a nice elephant ear plant and it thrived near our back window. My wife noticed that the underside of the leaves were infested with a small bug about the size of an aphid but round. I think it is some kind of plant mite. I tried taking it outside and spraying it liberally with a solution of castile soap. no bugs washed off. They clung so tightly that I had to douse a paper towel with the wash solution and rub them off. I let it dry and brought the plant in before dark. At first it got a little sick from the wash but it perked up and was looking good. Then my wife noticed the bugs were back and a leaf is dying. Is there any way of identifying what we have and is there an insecticide that is effective and safe to bring into the house?
