How do you keep container plants alive indoors?

I don't know why, but for the life of me I cannot keep indoor plants alive! I recently killed off a silver philodendron by pruning it back because a lot of the leaves were yellowing and dry. I killed off a kalanchoe, a rose succulent (yes you read that right!) and cyclamen.

Every year I grow a garden and it thrives wonderfully, but I can't keep houseplants alive. My husband and I were able to identify one problem-- our apartment's climate is terrible. In the winter, all the moisture is sucked out of the air, and in the summer the only place we can put the plants is near the AC.

In the past when I had a container plant and kept it outdoors, it did well. The minute I moved it indoors it died soon after.

Is there something I'm missing? It gets frustrating because indoor plants make my home look more inviting and it looks nicer. At least I didn't kill my orchid, that's a huge bonus.
