I'm not quite understanding your questions. You don't want to end up with a small piece and a non symmetrical design. Start from the center with a whole piece, work up and down with whole pieces. Cut the last 2 pieces, one each on top and on bottom, the same size. Hard to explain!

Sometimes my tile guy cuts down every tile so you have "whole" pieces that are all the same size. You need to play around with the tiles and pattern and figure out which layout will look more pleasing or balanced. We all have different needs or tolerances for symmetry and perfection!!

I agree with Chispa. Spend a little time trying out various combos of the bullnose. You want to try to get as much symmetry as you can. And consider how grout lines will line up with the wall tile.

That would be my PRIMARY consideration, no matter HOW small the pieces might be, unless it'll be like a 1/2" piece or something like that.

Well the bullnose Trim on inside of window recess is on its 3rd try. After redoing the top row, to line up with wall grout line (over 1/8 inch)one side looked like a blind man did it. Decided to center all pieces. You are all right-looks much better to center so cuts are on top and bottom. Mitering the corners is areal p.i.t.a -by the way. I'm gonna need more tile as I keep messing up the cuts.

Even my very experienced tile guy has to sometimes sacrifice some tiles to get the perfect cut/fit. I used an arrabesque glass tile and we needed to cut a hole in it to fit over plumbing. The first one they put up was 2 pieces patched together and I wasn't happy with the way it created shadows. I asked him to try to drill the hole. I had plenty of tiles. He decide to take them home and do it with patience. He took 4 tiles, which cracked, but he managed to get a perfect hole on that 4th tile. he was really happy and texted me a photo and then wrapped that "precious" tile in towels!! The end result looks perfect.
