Please help-what is best option with bullnose at tub/cabinet edge

Please help me determine what is the best option with the bullnose 4x4 at the tub edge where it meets the cabinet that holds the plumbing. I have 3 options that I can think of.

The tub and cabinet and how they join:

Now I am ready to tile with my bullnose tile on the side of the cabinet facing the tub. Below are the 3 options I've come up with. I don't know which would be best or is there another solution.

After setting the tile I was planning on using laticrete caulk to seal the edge. The triangle area between the curve of the tub and the square tile is a question for me too.

Option 1:

option #1 is my vote. Other options will look weird when the door is open

Ummm, this is going to be a problem for me, too. I'm thinking Option 2, as the void will be hard to fill with caulk and would bother me if left open.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. For better or for worse as I took all 24 tomatoes out and as I said I filled back in to the grade that surrounds the bed. It is close to what it would have been if I just removed the sod and put the bed on top. I tamped as I filled in so it would be as solid as I could make it with 20lb hand tamper and a 15lb patio block dropped from over my head. Some of the fill was a little rocky but I did get a couple some good sticky clay layers in there to fill in the all the voids and make it as impermeable as the surrounding ground. It was contoured with about a 2 inch drop both along the width and length dumping to the lowest corner of the bed which is above ground so it can drain out. I also put in a drain from highest to the lowest point hoping that would catch any excess and dump it out. Looking at my soil mix either it had way too much organic material in it or it was just that way because it was soaked, I remixed it with some top soil, agricultural sand, peat and vermiculite and through in a some gypsum in between some of the layers as I filled it back in. I put in some super phosphate to hopefully get some roots going quickly also. The bed was raised another 4.5" inches also to meet the bed on its right. The tomatoes are now back in their final resting place, I guess that sounds bad. Hopefully with the grade coming back up to meet the rest, the slope, the drain, the remixed soil, and the additionaly height the bed will drain properly and the tomatoes will come back to life. Some of them took it worse than others but I hope they make it, if not I guess I can sucker off the other 12 I have in containers and use those.

Well, phooey. I taped it out in the bathroom with blue tape last night and it looked like it would fit, but with too many nos, I'm back to the drawing board. Interesting thought, Vix. Right now we don't actually have a toilet room, so much as a separate toilet "area" (there's no door, and the closet takes up too much room to add a door), but it's on my agenda to create one. In our house, it's very necessary. I generally use that bathroom to try to FIND privacy, only to have 3 people (and sometimes the dog) follow me into the bathroom. I'm looking forward to having a door that locks and a fan so that I don't have two little people handing me the TP and asking whether I'm doing number 1 or 2 (oh, and the 1 year old likes to flush while I'm ON the pot; so I've got my own special cold water washlet), while DH decides that he absolutely has to shave and brush his teeth at that exact moment. Now if I take a hike to the guest bath on the other side of the house, all three just follow me AGAIN. Sometimes when I have insisted on locking the door in the guest bath (no way to do that with our LOUVERED -- why??? -- pocket door in the master), my one year old plopped down prostrate outside the door and cried until I open the door. For my W/C, I want to put in a LOUD fan; no whisper quiet for me. Maybe I'll even add a radio. :) The way I'm seeing it, I can either get rid of the long vanity altogether and live with a fairly small vanity, plus a tub and shower, I can skip the tub and live with the kids' bathroom on the third level as the only room with a tub, or we can bump out that weird corner jog, which would give us an additional 49'' X 27'' space -- enough to fit a 5X3 tub, 5X3 shower and keep the two vanities. But that sounds very expensive and will require carefully removing and replacing the siding to match the existing. DH's response to all this was "why do we need a tub?"

I don't have a tub recommendation other than to beware that Jacuzzi type tubs sometimes have electric controls where they cannot be used with showers. Some use pneumatic switches to be safe around water. I will say that I think your contractor's gout suggestion is one I would not use. I have always use epoxy grout around water. Near sinks and in the washroom. It costs a lot more to begin with but it is impervious to water. Not my experience with any other grout. It is also impervious to mold and grime. Comes in any color. They used to carry it at Lowes (probably still do).

If we can't convince you on not having a separate tub, then the Shub layout you proposed is certainly better than the first one. Personally, I could not live with a bathroom that small and have two people doing their things at the same time but only you can tell if you are good to live with that inconvenient and if the time you are two in there is worth making the floor space available to walk smaller. If you are still decided on a separate tub and a double sink vanity, here some changes from your layout I suggest. That is assuming that you can work around the window on the vanity wall (and some part of it in the shower. Assuming that you can do this, I also assumed that you can change your french doors to a single door. Making this change would double the hanging space for your clothes and make your bedroom few inches bigger. You may notice that I moved the tiny bedroom door and your bedroom door too. I think the hallway is best used for the space a swing door required. I put a pocket door to your bathroom. It is a space saver. I added a cabinet. That is optional. I would really hard time deciding between free space and storage. I would use the same floor all over (shower, tub and vanity areas). It will make it feel more spacious. I added a shower curtain that you can pull all the way while you shower. This way you won't have to wipe the tub every time you shower.

Sloyd, no door in the way, see first picture of the room. The door is inset. That space you see in option 1 is the gap between the cement board and the frame of cabinet.

Mabeldingeldine, I'm thinking #2 as well. With option 1 I could but a backing rod that is used to fill gaps before caulking. But I'm thinking #2. I did post on the JB forum. There I got several suggestions recommending #2.

I would do option 3, but continue with skinny tiles down the side of the tub. The first skinny tile would be cut to match the profile of the tub. Is it too late to build out your cabinet an inch or two, so the skinnies wouldn't be so skinny? It would just mean taking off the face frame, adding a bit of lumber, and reattaching the face frame.

I like catbuilder's idea. I'm thinking about building out my tub alcove in my bath to do the same thing.

Thanks you guys for your input. I won't be doing anything to the cabinet. The cabinet builder had done the work and I don't want to fuss with it now:) The original building plan was for the tile to be recessed into the side, butting up to the frame. But I built out the cabinet wall more fully than the initial plan. The plumber thought I needed to do the build out to correctly get the tub's tile flange covered. The hardy backer was originally going to set on top of the flange but the plumber would like to see it over lap the flange. So that is what I did. Hence the tiling surface is now too shallow to go with the the original plan.

I had thought of the skinny tiles all the way down the frame but I don't like the look when I mock it up. I liked option #1 because it was efficiant in its design and has a clean look. But I worry about maintainance.

If I do #1 I was planning on caulking the gap before tiling, painting with Hydroban, tile as usual, than caulk the seam between the wood and the tile.

Any more thoughts on these ideas?
