Lemon tree newbie

My mom planted 2 lemon seeds for me about3 years ago.. I have transferred to new pot last year and am gonna do a final transfer to a much bigger pot this summer.. It looks healthy too me, I water it about once a week and give it sunlight in a southern window during winter or outside for around 6 hours a day. Anyone have any tips tricks for me? Thanks.

Comments (6)I think they are fascinating trees--Poncirus. The first time I ever the tree was in Longwood Gardens in Pa.. They are hardy were I am but no one seems to grow them and I never see them being sold at garden centers. As I understand it, botanists classify them either as true Citrus or a very close relative. Their leaves remind me of the Kaffir lime (though the Ponciris has an additional third lobe). I As I said, I have mine containerized because I tread the thought of what I'd have to go through if I ever wanted it removed--those thorns are NASTY. Comments (10)I'm not going to answer all those questions, but here are a few comments. First, it looks healthy. It's grafted on a reasonable length of stem, which I like. Meyers are often rooted cuttings. In this case, it seems to have been a 'T-bud' type of graft - you can see the remains of the grafting tape which held it in place. The remaining rootstock has been cut back a little above the graft and appears to have been sealed with something black. However it has started re-growing at this point. Unusual, because all nodes are usually removed when the rootstock is cut, and this prevents re-growth. Also, the rootstock growth looks exactly like Meyers, although I suppose it could be Rough Lemon or something else similar looking. Anyway, I would cut off that stub. I wouldn't worry about the crossing branches at this stage. I wouldn't repot at this time of year. You have to decide if you are going to keep the plant growing over winter at above 50F or if you are going to allow it to become dormant below. If growing it needs good light. If dormant it needs very little water and lower light. I don't think a root stimulator is needed when re-potting. But your potting medium doesn't look very free-draining to me. Comments (10)Jenni, be careful that you don't over water with that soil mix. Before watering, check to see if it needs water by pushing a thin stick (like a shishka bob stick) all the way to the bottom of the pot. Pull it out and if there are any soil particles sticking to it, then it does not need watering. Use Foliage Pro 9-3-6 fertilizer, which is what most people on this forum use....See More
