Bed in a Small Bedroom - Help
Comments (32)Loves2read it sounds like your vacation house has much the same vibe going on. I absolutely love (and envy) that you found a faux bamboo set-- I watch for those kinds of pieces (even before the MCM house) on ebay. There seems to be a lot of it in the mcm/hollywood regency style available in FL. My biggest issue in needing to change out much of my furniture is that much of it is english country cottage/library-esque. It just doesnt mix well with the mcm vibe-- especially in scale. That said, I think thoughtful planning will let me go step by step through the house as time and budget allow. I know the kitchen will have a sleek modern look if not MCM.. and when I redo the kitchen, I plan to get the MCM dining table of my dreams. The office is going that direction now.. so trying to bring a little into the bedroom makes sense if I can find the right pieces. The main living space is my biggest challenge. I'd have to replace everything-- and I intend to-- but it won't happen overnight. I want to be thoughtful about it too-- because I want a warm cozy mid century look vs one that is very modern. Is there such a thing as mid century cottage LOL? No really, what I want is a layered look vs austere. I've seen a few designers do this BEAUTIFULLY with a few iconic pieces. That's how I'd want to go too. I've strayed off the bedroom topic-- but wanted to address your post and to thank you!! Would love to see photos of your vacation house. Here's a small peak at the swirled ceiling throughout the house. The photo resolution doesnt do it justice. It's all hand done and beautiful if you like that kind of thing. Originally I'd wanted to undo it-- but I am warming up to embracing it (especially since my grandfather did it all by hand)....See MoreDH is now ok with an iron bed! Will it go?
Comments (40)Skeet, I am in love with the Wesley Allen Quati in aged black! I think that is the Iron bed I should have bought and I should have bought the foot board also despite it being a tight fit. I loved it but there was not a lot of room for the footboard and I was not sure how it would look in the rustic ivory color which is what I thought at the time would look good with my Stanley bedroom set that I ended up returning. I liked the cottage white finish but the salesman talked me out of it. I like my WA Maywood Iron headboard but with the poor lighting in my bedroom, the rustic ivory color always looks dirty unless I have all the blinds open and it is sunny outside which is usually not the case since I like privacy and my Master bedroom faces the street. It also is too fancy for my Royal Cottage bedroom set I have now but looked nice with the Stanley Bedroom set that came so damaged with finished not matching in the set. The loading dock antique iron bed in that cottage white color in the picture above would look perfect in my room in a Queen size frame. I really like it also. I wish Wesley Allen would have a mat antique white or mat ivory finish which is what I really wanted and not a shiny antique white finish or a Mat white finish if I wanted to stay with the cottage look but not go with the Rustic Ivory or the cottage white (that had that chippy look with black on it rather than iron showing through). I always had a golden oak bedroom so I wanted a change when my platform bed fell apart. I really wanted Cherry wood but it was too costly so I went with Durham Royal Cottage in the White Sand finish over solid maple wood. I really needed more time to pick out a headboard but I was rushed by my friend who wanted me to make a decision and by a client that said they would pay the restocking fee if I did not like the headboard when it arrived so I would get back to their work. But he defaulted on his promise. But one thing I can say about my headboard is that it gives the bed a finished look, is very well made, gives an airy feeling to the bedroom so it is not all wood around the room since I have a lot of furniture in my bedroom. My 6" headboard (others styles that I liked better had a lower headboard and I wanted mine to be close to 6" tall) also looks like a grown-up headboard which is what I wanted and that is why I stayed away from shiny antique white. I only like shiny in the brass but that would not go in my bedroom. I know a lot of people with iron headboards and they all look classy to me....See MoreAnyone Decorating With A Lot of Oak Furniture?
Comments (28)I hated oak because I had oak in my last two kitchens. What I realized is it wasn't the wood at all but the yellow stain that was on it. Not the orangey stain but a true golden color. My most favorite dining table was a round oak antique dining table that I gave to my DS. DH, for our anniversary one year, gave me a beautiful antique oak cupboard. I have it in my breakfast area and was going to find another spot for it and have my cabinet maker do a custom piece in the same maple as my kitchen. I decided that there is no way that a new piece would have the same character so I am keepingit where it is. Our small book room has a beautiful custom oak wall of cabinetry and shelves in a lovely cinnamon stain. It may not be considered fashionable, and I have to admit that my all time favorite wood is cherry, but oak is a lovely wood in it's own right. What is fashionable now will be out of favor in a few years anyway so love what you have! My3dogs, that s a killer piece that you scored on CL! I love t!...See MoreWhat to do with this antique dresser?
Comments (44)GCSciencechick, the Empire period was around 1815-1840. That means that Empire furniture is coming up on 200 years old now. As said, an Empire renaissance is coming, with appreciation for itincreasing dramatically--along with its price. If only I'd liked Empire more, I'd have been collecting it for decades as for most of my life it's been the only genuinely antique, fine quality furniture I can afford good pieces of. That said, yours is in poor condition, which will probably severely limit its price and restoration appeal for another few decades--until the good-condition stuff becomes prohibitively expensive for most people. AND you don't like it. Someone may have suggested this, but if you don't pass it on to someone who does want it, you might consider applying a coat of something removable to protect what is left of the original finish and the wood, then go ahead and fill and paint over that. Turning that homely, beat-up old thing into something that would be appreciated and cared for over these coming decades is not the worst thing that could happen to it by far....See MoreRelated Professionals
