Anyone Decorating With A Lot of Oak Furniture?

Generally darker oak, as in English country, perhaps.

I have a few pieces in oak, and was going to "phase" them out, but I've decide to embrace my inner oak and run with it. :)

English country might not be "in" right now, but done right, I think it's still beautiful.

Anyone wanting to show me pictures of their rooms done in oak?

I don't have photos, but...

I LOVE darker oak, especially when quartersawn.
I have several Stickley pieces and will be adding one or two more.

In or not, I think it is beautiful also!

We have several dark oak Stickley mission pieces scattered throughout our main living areas -- bookcases, an antique rocking chair, and a dining table. I love quartersawn oak! This is our latest addition -- the dining table.

Not sure I explained myself well, based on your response. I am notsuggesting wrapping the brick wall in wood, and the wood i am suggesting would match your cabinets. I am suggesting a panel of cherry that runs in a vertical line the width of the fireplace (after covering the brick surround and one brick width wider all around that in a dark granite). The rest of the wall would remain brick. The wood panel would cover the arched niche (once you knocked off the lip). You could easily add a mantel then, perhaps in the same wood or even a rectangular box of stainless steel) on top of the wood panel. The ledge may be at eye level,but that in now way precludes you from leaning a piece of art on it. Check out how art is hung in galleries and in collections in homes, and not all of is (or can be if in a grouping)at eye level. I wish I could photoshop this to better illustrate my thoughts.

Well, you have to live in your space as it works best for you, so I guess if you are happy with the last arrangement, then you should keep it. If you do that, tho, you need to turn the rug the other way, so it follows the widest line of your furniture placement. The way it is now, it feels like a runway between the couch and the ec. However, I think that arrangement feels like everything in the room is jammed against the window. However, I think you have room to do it with the couch facing the fireplace. if you look at the pix before the angled one, the most overhead, you can see that what you need to do is move the run closer to the fireplace. The front legs of both chairs should be sitting on the rug. The arm of the couch should be lined up with the divide between the middle and left windows. That should give you plenty of room for cabinets or bookcases on that back wall. If the couch works better for you off-center, that is fine. No rule that says everything in a room has to be centered. I understand your DHs concern about the one leather chair not facing the tv if it is on the right side of the fireplace, but how often do you have enough people on the space that it is an issue? You continue to mention that you need a coffetable. What is your vision for how that will be used? Generally, people sitting on a couch are not crazy about having to lean forward or move forward on the seat to reach a beverage, for example, And certainly you dont want a coffetable for people to put their feet up on. If you are interested, try moving the rug closer as suggested. But if you want to keep things as they are, I would for sure turn the rug.

First of all, you've done a great job on everything I can see of this house and your choice of furniture is very nice. Given the small dimensions of the living area I'd choose a not too large glass and metal coffee table to create a feeling of more space. Also, even though fireplaces are usually the focal point of a living area, given its placement I would ignore that concept. Your living room so far is very sparse, basically a couch, TV and coffee table, so I would place the chairs you have at right angles to the couch which would also give more places to view the TV. I would also increase the size of the carpet in the living room so that it covers almost the whole area, and choose a polypropylene rug with a pattern which is easy-care with a baby and will introduce some color in what so far is a very monochromatic space. I would also use one for the dining room for ease of cleaning with a somewhat different but complementary pattern and color to give added interest. Perhaps you could have a wooden chair of some kind, even a rocking chair, placed next to the fireplace but as part of the living room design, angled toward the coffee table.

The whole space could use some updating except for the fireplace stone and the cabinets, unless you do not like the honey oak. I didnt really want to say but I have to because the white appliances really age the place. What I would do is decide if you are keeping the hardware on the cabinets and use those to determine what kind of metal you are going with for the other hardware and light fixtures in the home. If you can redo all the flooring to one uniform floor it will really give the place some flow. White paint will open it up but you might want something else nicer, a grey is really nice but very hard to nail down and then you would have to change the cabinets, you could go white with them since I saw you had white trimming in the home, what color are your doors? I would do flooring first and fixtures then paint followed by cabinets if you must. From there do the window treatments, rugs, and lighting then work on furnishing especially seating,and accessories like plants and art. If you already moved in and purchased some furniture already your going to have to really focus on the direction your headed and if they are going to workout for the layout in the long run. I like tile flooring but because of the fireplace wood would look nice so I would suggest the wood look tiles for your space, it is very nice. Definitely not a fan of the fan in the kitchen you deserve something nicer. I'm confused by your description of the backsplash and countertops are you able to provide closer pictures because they do not seem to go at all with the cabinets being honey oak.

Oak is good. Mission oak, Victorian oak. It's okay with me when it goes out of style because then I can pick up bargains. None of my rooms are totally done in oak but it is definitely the predominant wood in my house.

No pics, but I have medium tone oak antiques throughout my house and love, love, love it - will never tire of it: Barrister and quartersawn sliding-door bookcases, bow front china, dining table and chairs, stickley desk, hoosier, morris chair, oak and leather 1912 convertible couch, etc. So glad to hear others "embracing" oak, too!

I have an antique oak mantle, oak armoires, barley twist tables, several antique oak dressers and chest (some in attic), oh and pedestal table (also in the attic). I just love it!

I'm glad to see others embracing oak, as well. I am hoping to score big on something tomorrow on Craigslist. I'll post photos if I get them. (Chairs to go with an oak table I have.)

I have a lot of quartersawn oak pieces as well. Love old oak. I think oak has gotten a bad wrap with all the 90's builder grade oak kitchen cabinets, with their orange tint. I think old oak will always been in style.

I also have a good bit of antique oak furniture. Love the patina of old pieces.

We also have custom oak cabinets - minus the orange/yellow tint. Some people actually like oak!

I have an old oak 54" round table from the '20s that I didn't know what to do with. It needs a lot of work. Well, this conversation, especially sue's pic, have convinced me to refinish it and put it in our library. It would go perfectly with our ink blue velvet loveseat (happy birthday to me!). Love your space, sue!

As much as it may not be "in style", I love oak.

I have never understood the oak disdain. Until I started hanging out here, I honestly never knew such a thing even existed. :)

I have all sorts of old/antique oak pieces. And maple pieces. And wood furniture of all sorts of species. Heck, my former house even had the dreaded "orange" oak for my kitchen cabs....and being a decorating moron, I actually LIKED those cabs. Ha-ha.

I guess, for me, I care more about the utility of the piece rather than what species it is.

carriem....love the dining set and your oak trim. and if accessorized nicely, the builder grade oak cabinets are warm and inviting...there's just something about wood...LOL

I have several antique oak pieces and I embrace them. My home has some PB, some RH and some antiques. I love the mixture.

Our entire kitchen and family room is quarter sawn oak
in this color. We love quarter sawn oak in this color, thus I finished
all the cabs and furniture in this deeper color.

the bird cage is quarter sawn oak as well...in the same room

I hated oak for awhile after I bought this home because I had a ton of it in our other home all in the same color. I painted out all the wood here then realized to late that it wasn,t the wood I distlked I was just tired of seen the same old orang/pecan color on everything. Now that I have imbraced the idea that all the wood in the house doesn,t have to be exactly the same shade and tone I am again embracing my inner oak;)

We have darkly stained quarter sawn oak trim throughout the house and I love it. Two of my favorite pieces of furniture are a medium oak Victorian table and a very patinaed dresser w/ east lake drop pulls. I also recently purchased another dresser that I think DH said was oak too. It's dark too and Victorian w/ ornate glass pulls.

Oak is wonderful furniture. It is best choice for home and shop decoration.

Glad to see so many others out there!

My new chairs are in my dining room, but I still don't have the bench yet. It's at my daughter's house, since I couldn't get them all in my vehicle.

bird_lover, Since you like my CL finds, I'll show this one if you didn't see it before when I bought it a month ago. It was $200, and the kind sellers delivered it to my door and brought it into the garage. I want to clean it up a bit, so it's still 'decorating' the garage.

my3dogs, that table is gorgeous. Beautiful oak pieces all!

I have a few dark pieces, a few lighter oak pieces, and an orangey oak staircase, which I love, and cannot convince myself to paint.

I hated oak because I had oak in my last two kitchens. What I realized is it wasn't the wood at all but the yellow stain that was on it. Not the orangey stain but a true golden color.

My most favorite dining table was a round oak antique dining table that I gave to my DS.

DH, for our anniversary one year, gave me a beautiful antique oak cupboard. I have it in my breakfast area and was going to find another spot for it and have my cabinet maker do a custom piece in the same maple as my kitchen. I decided that there is no way that a new piece would have the same character so I am keepingit where it is.

Our small book room has a beautiful custom oak wall of cabinetry and shelves in a lovely cinnamon stain.

It may not be considered fashionable, and I have to admit that my all time favorite wood is cherry, but oak is a lovely wood in it's own right. What is fashionable now will be out of favor in a few years anyway so love what you have!
