Comments (25)We are seeing the effects at the shop already of people on fixed incomes especially the elderly. Its terrible. People come in needing the a/c fixed in the car and look so sad when you tell them the cost. We help them out as much as we can and have gotten more into the barter system like the old days and trade work for work we need done when we can but we still have overhead costs to pay to stay in business. This one lady came in today and had paid someone $1500 to replace her entire a/c system and it still didn't work. She said it worked for about an hour. John checked it and they didn't put in a seal which caused a massive leak and she probably only needed one part to make it work to begin with and definitely not an entire system. I hate seeing people get ripped off. She had used her income tax rebate and stimulus money to fix what she had done already so we helped her out and she will come pay us later for the freon. I hope things don't get so bad that I can't continue to help the occasional person and that we don't end up getting messed over by people because they have to have repairs and just don't have the money. Its sad times and you are right going to get worse. I just went and read the thread about show yourself again and laughed so hard. That was a really fun thread. Sometimes if you think about it too much it makes it worse and you just have to find something to laugh about. I will look and see if I have anymore veggie seeds Marion. I need to plant another crop of squash as well since only one of Johns kind came up since the seeds are getting old. I sent most of the veggie seeds out at Christmas. I wish I could still have the energy for a big garden and to put it all up canning and freezing. I love fresh veggies....See MoreBuying House 'Stuff' in GA, SC, NC & TN
Comments (16)Wow! Great info. I know that I can't go treasure hunting for too much for the build given that we now live in Houston, but I'd love to hit an architectural salavage place to find some door knobs, hinges for French doors and old tiles for the fireplace. I'd be happy of I could just have some old door knobs & not just reproductions. Of course, they may not match up with the way the modern doors are drilled, so it may be a pipe dream for a new house. I think y'all are convincing me to hold off on doing conventional built-ins by the fireplace and hope I can find some unique pieces to be fitted in, later. Eastern European really piqued my interest because I have a collection of Matryoshka dolls, lacquerd boxes and "laser" crystal pieces that I picked up on my trips to Moscow (in a famous flea market on the outskirts) which I would like to display. Have any of you used soapstone & where did you find it? The websites for Slabco, Classic Granite & G&L Marble show pretty slim pickings. I know there is a place up in VA where some is still mined & they have imports. Is there anywhere closer than that? I forgot about the rock slide, but it should be cleared by the time we would do any serious hunting for items. If anyone thinks of a neat place I should look at, just pop it on the thread. Ummm, I looked at Mapquest & Knoxville is only about 150 miles from TR, so that is a fairly easy daytrip (plus, traveling through the mountains should be lovely.) We're only finishing the main level and my sewing/crafts room on the lower level for now. Once we get there, I can take my time to find stuff for the rest of the lower level. Good to know that one can buy furniture at High Point and not have to take immediate delivery. Years ago, DH & I took a little day trip down there when we were up to Raleigh for Thanksgiving. DH grew up in Wadesboro, NC & went to school at NC State. Mom lived in Raleigh before she passed in 2006. We've been to Winston-Salem a few times to visit Reynolda House and to go hiking in the general area. As a matter of fact, several of the daughters of my 6 times great grandfather moved with their families from PA to NC to help found the Moravian settlement in Wachovia, so I must have distant kin in the Carolinas. OK, its late & I'm rambling. We talk to two more builders tomorrow to go over their preliminary bids. Its finally starting to seem real & we could be in our "forever" home by the end of the summer....See MoreHave you ever met anyone of the opposite sex who scared you?
Comments (6)Many times. I have had men follow me from store to store in the mall. I have had men follow me while I'm walking my dog. In my previous home, there was a neighbor that did this. I knew he knew where I lived, so this bothered me more than when it was random men, I would just keep walking around until they gave up and went away rather than lead them home. I have had men physically block me from walking away from them (say, in a bar I'm at the bar getting drinks for me and friends, he will position his body to block me from walking away). When I was a waitress, I had a customer (not a regular, even, someone I'd never met before) ask me for a ride somewhere else after work. I declined. When he left, he hung around in the parking lot (this was at midnight when we were closing) until the owner went out there and made him leave. I once had a regular obscene phone caller. He would sometimes call early in the morning while I was asleep, so I was kind of groggy trying to figure out who was calling. One of those times, I asked who is this, he gave a name (steve or something), I said who, he said we met at a gas station (he described the one near my house) and I gave him my number. Never happened, and it worried me he'd picked a spot so near to where I lived that we had supposedly met... did he know where I lived? As far as I know, I've never had someone actually follow me in my car. I'm not afraid to go out alone, but I'm sure there are plenty of men who have been offended because I will walk away from someone I feel is being overly familiar and starting to invade boundaries. And I'm also quite sure most of them don't mean any harm, but most men, have not had similar experiences with women (and the ones who have, probably haven't been by someone a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than them) and don't understand that there ARE plenty of men out there who are scary and threatening and we have reasons to be wary. Especially younger guys, I think older ones have in many cases heard enough stories from wives, girlfriends, and female friends to get it a little bit....See MoreSoliciting at the gas station
Comments (18)Write to the corporation CEO and let them know. Also contact the local law enforcement and they usually will at least contact the station. Not happening here in ND yet, but would not be surprised if it did. It did happen to us in the San Fernando Valley (near Los Angeles) last time we got gas. DH handed him a small bill, he went over and put gas into the car and came back and told us thank you. Sure surprised us and made us feel good. But that is the exception. You are right, they are really strict in CA to that problem. But then many of the drivers are carrying guns too--sad to say!!! But IF it does happen while you are filling, and others are around you, just tell person No in a very loud voice--or say are you kidding--- anything to attract attention. Love my on star for that....See Morekitasei
