Have you ever met anyone of the opposite sex who scared you?

I was at the gas station once, and the man at the next pump struck up a conversation with me. When I left, I noticed he was still in the parking lot, and then noticed he was behind me. I didn't go home, went to another shopping center, and he followed me there and waited for me to come out. When I saw him following me again, I drove straight to the local police substation. He went past as I was getting out of my car, and I got his license number and reported him.

I mentioned to a coworker one night at work that I was getting off at 10, and when I left, there was a man standing at the door who had been in the store. He told me he just thought he'd wait and walk me to my car. I said "that's nice of you" then I pretended to have forgotten something, and went back inside. He waited, I got the manager, and he went out and asked him to leave. The manager had to walk me to my car from then on! That was really scary, because a woman had been abducted from a Wal-Mart parking lot not long before that.

Oh, I can imagine how scared you must have been! I had a similar incident in my bar/dancing days, and it terrified me - lucky for me I never saw the man again. I live in a big city, and bad things happen all the time - makes a single woman afraid to go out alone.

Just a thought Junkyard Girl. I take it you work in retail, you say "this man was there when I left the store." BE CAREFUL if you work with the public, some men who so much as get a sales woman who merely asks if they need help, you end up with a hanger around-er for the entire rest of your shift, necessitating a call from Security.

I have been followed too, but thankfully, lost them. When I was much younger this type of thing happened more frequently...maybe now that I am older, strangers don't as often assume that I am so naive and trusting. But...at this one mall close to my apartment, there is one door leading into the mall that most of the time, has loiterers hanging around. I have often had some of them try to accost me, on my way into the mall. I am not afraid to be rude, some crime prevention advice also states, that this is what some criminals hope to get, is a woman who is afraid to be rude, who thinks she has to be "nice." So don't be afraid to be rude.

For me to be open to being interested in a man, it has to be someone I have seen around for a while, so that they are not a complete and total stranger. I am never going to be the the type to give out my phone number to some stranger I just met out of the blue.

Sounds though, like you are already very careful. good for you!!

my goals were/are \- this is working for me so far as I can tell, but everything's very new. ~~~ go with a cottage rose garden loose romantic style, while using plants that do well in my climate. \- I found plants that I like that are romantic but drought\-tolerant, so I think as I get better at gardening and the garden matures, that this goal will be reached. ~~~ chose plants that are mostly native or drought\-tolerant and if possible hummingbird friendly \- this has mostly worked out. I'm still doing the throw plants and see if they live method, but some things like agapanthus, penstemon and some other things have done really well and the hummingbirds love them. ~~~ herb pot area \- the basil has been a resounding success. I haven't actually used any of the other herbs, but I bought 2 more basil because we use it so much. The pots look cute by the back door, too. ~~~ have two seating areas, one as a rose arbor, the other, some type of simple bench under the sakura tree. \- I have the spot roughly laid out for the arbor, but I'm waiting on buying an arbor. Mostly due to me being scared to spend $200 on an arbor, which is rather silly considering the amount I spent on roses I don't really have room for. ;) \- I'm going to wait until the sakura tree gets bigger to put a bench near it, so... maybe 5 years or so. We'll see. ~~~ I want to have stuff that blooms year round. \- I'm so new I don't really know what plants I have will survive, so this will have to be something to ponder gradually. So far, I'm really loving the roses, nepeta, sakura and irises. We'll see how the other plants do. I could use more fall/winter flowers, but I'm still having problems with camellias. ~~~ eventually I'd like to have a pergola off the back of the house. ~~~ sometime soon\-ish, I want to have some stepping stones from the driveway into the back sideyard,... and have a mostly older HT bed there. (front yard) I think I can do this pretty soon. But I have to get the irrigation in first. I've already bought the HTs which will come this fall and next spring and sit in the pot ghetto till I'm satisfied. ~~~ My next main goal is just to evaluate the roses I have and try to learn better about how to water properly and not kill things. My crepe myrtle looks a bit upset and I think I killed one of my sansaquas... my almost dead camellia in the front is recovering, though. ~~~ gradually trying to improve my heavy clay soil

This is a real hotbed that contains many gray areas. First, 'convicted' is the operative word here. 'Suspects' are not put in the database, only those tried, convicted and found guilty in a court of law. And there could be a wide range of scenarios as bud_wi mentions. But the bottom line is the offender is there and you are scared. You can check Megan's law for your state, and other laws on the books as well. Google Megan's law and put your state's name behind it, or google "residency restrictions convicted sex offenders Texas" (substitute your state's name in place of Texas). You might get specific details on laws (or pending laws being battled in court) regarding residency status and rights of offenders in your state. Whether your state requires realtors/landlords to disclose this information or not is gray as well, based on what I've read with regard to Megan's law. However, I have read of situations whereby if something bad happens to a resident who moves near a convicted offender, and a lawsuit occurs, some courts are noting that realtors/landlords had a reasonable responsibility to check and then disclose this information to prospective tenants/home buyers before lease/purchase. When did your lease start? When was the offender convicted? (Some battles in court now are that newer residency restrictions cannot legally be imposed on offenders convicted before Megan's Law or Jessica's law went into effect.) Databases are updated diligently, but there is some 'lag' time (could be days to weeks). So it is possible you got caught in a 'pause'. In other words, offender could have been convicted Jan 1. You sign lease Jan 4. Paperworks is processed and offender's name shows up in database Jan 10. You were caught in the 'pause', as you moved in during the time Offender was being processed into the system. Or, was he convicted after you had lived there for awhile? As with the crime, there are other possible scenarios with conviction and move-in dates that do not necessarily point toward the landord being uncaring and only it if for the $$. Some landlords might not agree with me, but as a landlord and aunt to a young woman your age with a disability that makes her more vulnerable than average: were she in your shoes, I would want her out. Lots of distance between her and offender. Please do communicate with your landlord. Put it in writing and send it certified (signature required). Tell him/her that you have discovered tenant across the hall has two convictions, and being a single female, you fear for your personal safety. Print out the information from the offender's database, included it with your letter. Keep an exact duplicate of everything you mail for your records. Tell the landlord you are beginning a new apartment search and putting them on notice that you will be leaving before your lease is up and that you anticipate no negative recourse for your move. It's my belief that a reasonable landlord would not attempt to force a single 20 year old woman to live across the hall from a convicted sex offender. The potential risk would far outweigh the gain. If your landlord attempts to force you to stay in the lease, consult an attorney to see what your rights are. In the interim, do not run around your building announcing to anyone who will listen about the presence of this offender. You may well find yourself at the center of a firestorm for violating this person's civil rights regarding residency. Like it or not, that offender has some residency rights. Before I get slammed for saying that, I'm not saying I agree with these rights, I'm simply saying they exist. Laws have been challenged in multiple states that convicted offenders, for various reasons, cannot be discriminated against regarding housing. Primarily it concerns blocking them from living within 2000' of schools, playgrounds or other areas where children congregate. It may well be, in your state, that your landlord cannot legally block this person from living in your building. (Not knowing your state and not being a lawyer, I do not know.) Please read the two articles below on imposing residency limitations on convicted offenders and the ensuing challenge to that law by registered offender(s). If I understand correctly, Iowa Supreme Court stands firm, while California is still battling in this arena. California Proposition 83: Judge blocks part of sex offender law. L.A. Times, Nov 8, 2006 Iowa Supreme Court upholds broad sex offender residency restrictions, Sentencing Law and Policy July 29, 2005 (read the comments posted below article this to see even more sides to the coin, some from registered offenders who have since conviction started families of their own.) Again, I am not agreeing with what's going on, I am only pointing out that there are new laws being put on the books and those new laws are being challenged in some states.

I am so GLAD that you ladies all feel the way I do. I was starting to think maybe I WAS just being insecure and jealous but it seems to be the general opinion that no one would dig this situation. That being said heres the follow up. I went home that evening after we had our little row over the phone about this woman. I was bracing myself for a cold shoulder or comfrontation because I had been STRONG in some of the words I chose. LOL. Anyway, when I walk thru the door the house was nice and clean. Laundry was being done and dinner was already on the table. The girls had already bathed and a glass of tea was waiting for me at the coffee table by the couch where I always nurse Layla. The conversation never came up. It was like it never happened. He was suppose to help her move furniture around her shop for some $ the next day but when she called he didn't even answer the phone. She called four times and left a message. He didn't even return her call. So I'm wondering what the hell clicked in that three hours between our conversation and me getting home. When I checked our shared cell phone I noticed he had called his dad after we hung up. He had called his dad to b*tch about me and his dad must have agreed with me!!! HAHAHAHA. His dad must of said something to him that clicked. The conversation still hasn't come up but 50 bucks says he won't go to the shop anymore. I do honestly believe he was only being friendly for someone he thought was a nice person having a hard time. He's like that. He is even MORE like that now because of his new found devotion to trying to be a better Christian. He has turned to faith because his situation with work has him feeling beat down. He is looking for guidance and some hope. He prays alot and reads a bible where as he never did before. He gets us all out the door to church every Sunday and bugs me to pray and read my bible as well. It wasn't him I didn't trust...it was her. If the situation had been a little different I wouldn't of had the issue I had with it. Of course he didn't want to validate my concerns which only pissed me off more. Apparently hearing it from Dad was enough to make him rethink the situation a little bit. I wish I knew exactly what was said. As far as the work issue, he has passed out tons of appliations and resumes this past three months and has gone to Workforce I KNOW at least a dozen times. Nowhere is hiring. It's just plain scary. He is feeling very much so like a loser right now and has expressed this to me many times. His self esteem is extremely low. DO I think this is why he was helping this woman so much? No. I think he feels if he strives to be more godly than he will be more open to gods hand stearing him in the direction he wants him to go. He was wanting to help out another Christian and in the process wasn't thinking of all the factors involved. He isn't a bad guy looking to get laid. Just a good guy who doesn't realize that some women can not just be friends with a man or sometimes the risk just isn't worth it. It was the same thing with the computer. He honeslty felt that he was just friends with all these old aquintances. He didn't see it any different than talking to the old guy friends from High School. It just never accured to him how messy things like that can get. It can go from friendly and innocent to complicated in the matter of one typed sentence. He has a bad case of the male ding bat syndrome. A woman could straight up standing in front of him batting her eyelashes and wearing I ighn that read "I WANT YOU SLEEP WITH YOU" while wearing nothing but a ball cap and he would just "She was nice don't you think?" He is just that oblivious. He can't see underlying intentions untill they have smacked him dead in the face. In the case it would be he wouldn't see it untill a friendship had turned into something else. By then it's too late. If you love your family you don't leave yourself open for these things to even have a CHANCE of happening. You avoid the situation all together which seems to be what he has decided to do....THANK GOD!

Gardenspice, sorry this is so late, but I never saw your post! We had a "friend" who was going through a rough patch with his wife and he had just lost his job. They only had one vehicle and I offered to loan him my green '97 Sebring Convertible to use whenever he wanted,we have three cars for the two of us, so it wouldn't be a hardship to us. After about a year I offered to sell it to him for $2500, we drew up a promissory note and we both signed it in April of '09. I gave him two years to pay it off, $100/month for 25 months. In October of that year he hadn't paid a dime and I filed an addendum to the original Promissory note because he hadn't paid per the contract. He skipped town and moved to Indiana with my car without making a single payment. I found out where he worked and had him served at his work with legal papers for the money. While the filing was happening, I called several shows, Judge Alex was the first to call on a Tuesday, the show was taping on Thursday! But when they got us there within days (which is why a lot of people aren't prepared when they come to court). I totally thought it was a joke until I went to the courthouse and they confirmed that a guy had been in a few days earlier to look for my file. I was called on a Tuesday and flew out Thursday morning. They flew me to the FOX studios and had a meet and greet with my handler and given $35 cash for spending money for the night. They also provided a hotel room. They flew me in but not Jim, who really wanted to be there, drove the 6 hours or so to meet me there. The next day they were taping and did my hair and makeup and fed me about 6 Red Bulls to get my emotions rolling, but I don't get upset easily, so the script they wanted me to say I flubbed up so bad it was left on the cutting room floor. How these court shows work is that the people really ARE real, and Judge Alex dismissed my case without predjudice, which means I can resue him when the two year Promissory note was cleared. We were each given $150 for our appearances and up to your state law for the car (mine happened to be $2500. Now, at least on JA's show, the money comes from the the network and goes to the winner and the defendant would have to pay nothing to me. But could he keep his big, fat mouth shut he would have gotten off scott-free and would no longer be required to pay me anything. But the dumbass waved the Addendum to the judge and screwed himself out of $2500. The two years went by and voila! There was a cashiers check from the weasel. I am glad it is all over, but I miss my Green Machine, I hated to see it go.

Many times.

I have had men follow me from store to store in the mall.

I have had men follow me while I'm walking my dog. In my previous home, there was a neighbor that did this. I knew he knew where I lived, so this bothered me more than when it was random men, I would just keep walking around until they gave up and went away rather than lead them home.

I have had men physically block me from walking away from them (say, in a bar I'm at the bar getting drinks for me and friends, he will position his body to block me from walking away).

When I was a waitress, I had a customer (not a regular, even, someone I'd never met before) ask me for a ride somewhere else after work. I declined. When he left, he hung around in the parking lot (this was at midnight when we were closing) until the owner went out there and made him leave.

I once had a regular obscene phone caller. He would sometimes call early in the morning while I was asleep, so I was kind of groggy trying to figure out who was calling. One of those times, I asked who is this, he gave a name (steve or something), I said who, he said we met at a gas station (he described the one near my house) and I gave him my number. Never happened, and it worried me he'd picked a spot so near to where I lived that we had supposedly met... did he know where I lived?

As far as I know, I've never had someone actually follow me in my car.

I'm not afraid to go out alone, but I'm sure there are plenty of men who have been offended because I will walk away from someone I feel is being overly familiar and starting to invade boundaries. And I'm also quite sure most of them don't mean any harm, but most men, have not had similar experiences with women (and the ones who have, probably haven't been by someone a foot taller and 100 pounds heavier than them) and don't understand that there ARE plenty of men out there who are scary and threatening and we have reasons to be wary. Especially younger guys, I think older ones have in many cases heard enough stories from wives, girlfriends, and female friends to get it a little bit.

I have no problem being rude! LOL I had just moved to a new town once, and found a place I thought would be nice to hunt shells. I was unaware it was a local lunchtime pickup spot! I was just shell hunting, and this man came and put his arm around me. I said very loudly "Get your hands off of me!!!" There were enough other people around for him to be embarrassed, and say he was sorry. I found out what the place was that night while talking to a friend, and I never went back there again. We laughed, because that man was probably shocked at what I did. I wasn't really scared, because of how many people were around. Little did I know, they were all looking for...well...you know! LOL

This is all too scary! I had a mad approach me as I was getting out of my car one evening. He asked me if I had anything to help him out - he was out of gas and needed to get somewhere with his daughter. The scary part was that he was right in front of me as I was getting out of the car, which made it difficult for me to have gotten away if he had pushed further. I had had a very hard day at work and was not in the mood. Plus he startled me so badly that I didn't think of being afraid at the time. I was just tired and wanted to get home, and he was interrupting me. I just looked at him and told him "today is not the day", and I guess he knew I meant it. He finally said OK and walked away. As I think back, he was probably meaning some harm. But I wasn't having it that day - luckily that kept me from thinking about it, or I probably would have shown more fear and weakness.

That is so scary!!

You mean other than the crazy woman who showed up uninvited repeatedly to my house and tried to get in? The one that told my 11 year old what EXACTLY she wanted to do to me? The one I had to call the cops to get rid of?

Other than that one, no.
