Advice on cutting tap root
Hello all!!
I don't know what I would do without this site!!! So much info and lots of great members providing valuable tips....thank you all!
So, I will be re-potting this little guy and would like to review the steps that I should take just so I don't make any foolish mistakes. What I would like to do is (1) replace potting medium, (2) prune the top and (3) cut the tap root to make the cool radial roots.
Question 1: I have the 1-1-1 gritty mix, should I repot in the gritty mix while operating on the little guy? Or plant in gritty mix first and let it settle in before cutting the root?
Question 2: When the tap root is cut, what is the glue that people are applying to the severed section (or is glue/bonding agent necessary?) Afterwards, I should let the plant dry for a few days? Should I apply Clonex and/or DynaGro KLN? If so, I presume I do so after the plant has dried and before planting?

Comments (4)The gist of what you are saying is correct. Taproots are grown from seeds, not cuttings. Cuttings will not develop a true taproot. The texture (for lack of a better word) of the roots will depend on the type of plant. In other words, only cuttings from plants that normally grow fibrous roots will have fibrous roots. Comments (3)You don't really need leaves to root so I would take those two side branches and make cuttings of them as well. It triples you chances of success. Usually those thicker, woodier canes do best with a method called callusing. Look in the Propagation forum for what is called the Burrito Method by Roseseek. 8 years agoCinamon or wood glue is fine or notting works too. Let dry a few days to a week. I use coconut fiber but now i am using coars sand and potting soil mix. A disk, rock or a pot under the plant. Some slow releas fertiliser.
I think that organic mix works better than griity mix for roots spread.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoOk repotted! It was left to dry for a few days, now the little guy is ready for his new home. I used a 50/50 cactus mix & perlite as the medium for now. I also made a couple incisions at the base of the caudex and applied some clonex to help promote root growth.
He's now sitting on top of a deli cup wrapped in some nice moist soil :)When should I water? Should I apply the same watering principle as per other DRs with roots? Or do I water more or less frequently?
