Ever done a really, really ugly color combo?
Comments (80)Some great comments on here, and some of the nicest "ugly" combos I've ever seen! And some of the neighborhood stories.... where do you start!? LoL I'm a color disaster. My wife frequently points it out in my clothing choices and even I can pick it out in the garden. But it doesn't bother me and having such a lousy track record makes it look like I walked on water when I get it halfway right! Here's a bad one. It's got variegation, chartreuse, pastels and a bold red... and a couple weeds for good measure....See MoreFeels like the longest winter ever- anyone else dying for ramps?
Comments (23)Back to winter here in central Maine after a lovely lovely warm sunny day yesterday. I met a couple of high school friends for lunch. We went to what passes for a deli in Maine - not bad but I don't think any of my jewish ancestor's would recognize my sandwich. Lol. One friend is dealing with chemo and being the primary caregiver for a mom with Alzheimer's and a husband dealing with long term diabetes related health issues. Somehow she is her gentle upbeat self. Inspiring. And there I was in the neighborhood of Johnny's Selected Seed and Fedco seed. I spent a happy hour buying way too many veggie seeds while employees were scurrying around fulfilling ordered. I am most excited about trying some new varieties of peppers and tomatoes. Also bought pumpkin/squash, pea, bean, basil, cilantro, parsley, broccoli, turnip, carrot and other seeds. Fedco has a lot of people working on strains of various plants good for our cool moist climate... So fantasizing about a summer meal and preparing to start seeds......See MoreWeek 110 - What was the worst food you ever ate?
Comments (63)I'm having the best time reading your memories. @Kippy. ROFL boiled lawn. I read it to my husband and he said, "that's just like your pennywort drink but worse". At least my drink has sugar in it to offset the taste. @jillius Durian smells really bad raw. Did the candy smell too? @mushcreek. I had to look up chitlins. OMG hog's intestines and guts. And it's served with my favorite foods, collard greens and fried chicken? Say what!! The name sounds like little critters running around, especially chitterlings. @mgmum Yes..... that's what I have nightmares and wrote about. Uni = RAW sea urchin. It looks like slimy, congealed barf. @flamingfish I used to feel the same way as you about oysters until someone introduced me to the right kinds of oysters. The oysters that I've learned to love are small and sweet. They're slightly chewy like clams and are delicious with lemon and a dash of spicy red sauce. Even my husband likes them and he is afraid of any food that isn't processed or packaged in a box or plastic. Those kinds of oyster are pretty expensive though so we only eat them when in San Francisco at a specific oyster bar during their happy hour. The oysters are $1/each then. @ Bob. if it's really "Cow fetus in placenta sauce" , you definitely beat the goat's eyes. @mrspete. Oooooh a Scots for hubby. I adore Scots and their accent. I will take your advice and NEVER try haggis. I don't need another memory scar. By the way, have you seen Outlander? @artemis "one could not remotely begin to guess which nodules were peppercorns or bits of lead shot!" - Too funny. @blubird. Yuck and just curious. Why are the ingredients no longer allowed to be sold?...See MoreFood Saver'd pork butt - safe to eat?
Comments (22)Parties get complicated for leftovers as it is social and we loose control over what we would normally do. I often chill meats immediately while carving, into a small platter or bowl and into the fridge, make stock after, then add chilled stock to the meat for the freezer. (knowing i'll have leftovers)...not always possible. NewYears was easy as we had so much ham. Half of the ham, sliced, went into the fridge early. I now have ham/veg stock with big ham chunks for soups. Rather than make a big soup, then freeze, i freeze parts. Soup 'kits'. Saturday, while multi-tasking for a SuperBowl party, i made a bone broth as i was prepping so much stuff anyway and had lots of veg going, chopping... Nice meal, kitchen clean, dishwasher started, party prep done, i turned off the stock and sat down for a brief rest....fell asleep. DH dealt with the stock. Woke at 3am and had no clue what happened. (a dozen questions later) He did great by removing solids, straining, adding ice, chilling in the downstairs fridge....un-covered. Thermopen temp, containered and labeled and frozen. Our gut systems are designed to handle all messes of bacteria with no issues. Compromised is young and old or dealing with any number of infections...medications, antibiotics....if your system is fighting something, it is working hard to deal with it. No need to add to a weak immune system working overtime. Friends and family trust my cooking above all others as i cook fresh organic stocks and fresh organic produce especially if in chemo or under health stress....See Moregrainlady_ks
