Where can I buy pine bark (fines) and coir in the northeast?
Comments (9)See if you can find a hydroponics store in your area. I get my coir from a hydroponics store near me and they sell it for $1.99 per brick. A brick hydrates to about 2 gallons (about the same volume of the bags of peat I got at Wal-mart for $2.78). You might not find it quite that cheap in NY, but if you can find it locally, you will at least save on shipping. I use Al's recipe and have had good results with the coir. It rewets easily which is a big plus for me in my hot and dry conditions. Lydia...See MorePine Bark Fines VS. Aspen Bark
Comments (14)I believe Al's recipe is 3-5 parts bark fines, 1 part turface or perlite and 1 part peat (would have to go look to be certain). What I am using this year is 2 parts bark fines, 1 part turface or perlite and 1 part peat. I do like this mix (certainly more than the mostly peat mixes from the store) and it retains water quite well (drying too quickly was my main concern since I grow a lot of water hungry plants), but overall I think the next time I make a mix I will reduce the peat as I can already see how the peat is mucking up the drainage. The bark fines actually hold a lot more water than I thought they would and the Turface is also quite good at retaining water. The peat is as well, of course, but it breaks down to muck inside one season whereas the Turface (or perlite) never will and the bark will take a couple/few years to do so. I do like the current ratio in self watering containers though. Probably would keep the mix the same with those....See MorePine Bark Fines or Mini Pine Bark Nuggets?
Comments (7)Normally I would say the "FINES" before looking at the photos. However, the fines look more like finely shredded bark/wood. The mini nuggets look very good but that depends on the size of the nuggets. The nuggets should be generally in the 1/8" to 1/2" size range. Maybe photos with a known object for size reference would help. Usually people drop a dime or quarter on the top of the nuggets before shooting a photo. Also, make sure there is very little wood pulp in the mix. Some are listed as "bark" but contain mostly ground up wood which is bad. Bruce...See MoreHeads up re pine bark beetles
Comments (8)I just discovered I've got 2 infested pine trees (huge ones), out of 10 total, in my backyard. After doing lots of googling and talking to the county extension agent, I, also, sprayed all my trees (with a specdtricide product containing permethrin)...mainly as a preventative measure for the uninfestated (I hope) trees. From all information I gathered, once infected, you can kiss them goodbye. I'm told you'll know they're dying when the pine needles in the tops of the trees start turning brown. The two I'll have to take down have trunks about 3 feet across. Large dollars. If all were to croak, I'd be up the creek financially. Chuckiebtoo...See MoreMarica 7 high Sierra's Ca 4,000ft
