kitchen cabinet paint gloss or high gloss?
Comments (1)Sheen levels are not standardized. Semi-gloss in one brand of paint may look more like gloss in another brand of paint. Sooo, you'll really need to look at some good sized samples of all the available sheen levels of the particular brand and type (oil, latex....) of paint that your painter will be using....See MoreNeed Help & Advice for Kitchen Cabinet Painting Issues
Comments (6)I've painted over 3,000 kitchen cabinets and I've never used lacquer. Some guys are married to that stuff and that's why they push it. YOU DO NOT NEED LACQUER. Lacquer is one of several hundred options. A quality 100% acrylic enamel or a hybrid like Advance, Cabinet Coat, etc. work well on kitchen cabinets when the substrate is properly prepared. Properly prepared is super, super clean with Dirtex or Jasco TSP substitute, sanded dull, primed and two coats of quality paint. The paint is probably soft due to excessive coats and improper drying times. Some questions for your painters. 1. What did they use to clean the cabinets? 2. What primer did they use? It should have been D&E specified primer. 3. What is bleeding through? A rough surface? The paint is slow to dry. If there is any dust movement in your house, the finish will be rough. Change the air filters and switch off the furnace during painting....See MoreTo Gloss or Not to Gloss? High Gloss Cabinets or not
Comments (12)High gloss is not for me. Not because I don't think it can look good in certain applications, but because I would freak out at the first scratch. I learned my lesson (for me only) long ago on furniture and cabinets. In my first home I bought very expensive solid cherry coffee and end tables with a nice beautiful shiny finish. The cat went skidding over the coffee table and left a scratch about ten inches long. There was no way to hide it, buff it out, cover it. I'm better with painted or natural wood finishes that are more forgiving. If you don't have kids, dogs, cats or a spouse, it's probably fine. I remember my nephew once tried to figure out if a piece of jewelry was a real diamond by scratching the glass face of a vintage clock. Yeehaw, it wasn't a diamond but it did scratch the glass......See MoreSemi-gloss or high gloss for kitchen cabinets
Comments (8)I have a semi gloss finish on my navy cabinets. My kitchen leans traditional, definitely not modern / contemporary. I see every finger print, smudge, etc on the island and fridge / freezer doors... wherever I have navy. Even when I think everyone's hands are clean, they leave marks. I'm constantly wiping my fridge and freezer panels, which are high-touch surfaces. I'm not type A or a ridiculous clean freak, but this bothers me greatly. If I could do over (which I'm not), I would not opt for any type of sheen or gloss finish. My perimeter cabinets are white with a matte finish. I do see food splashes, drips, etc, which I also clean. But for some reason the fingerprints drive me bonkers....See Morejmarino19
