Seagrass rug appropriate for dining room?
Comments (7)I have a high end flooring store and we also make custom rugs. We love selling seagrass carpet and rugs. I personally have it wall to wall in my home, including on the steps, along with area rugs. We also have it wall to wall in our store. I have trained 3 puppies on it and have had major spills. I find it cleans up wonderfully. I basically use two products, Woolite Oxyclean, which you can buy anywhere, and Capture (a Powder cleaner) which you can buy at Lowe's. You can totally soak any type of stain with the Oxyclean. Use a vegetable brush if you need to get any solids out of the crevices. Once the spot dries (and it can take a few days and look really bad while it is drying so don't worry) use the powder Capture to sprinkle in, to clean up any residues, then vacuum up the powder. I have kept all the Seagrass that I have looking new and some of the Seagrass is over 10 years old. Also, Seagrass is not expensive and looks great in all types of decor....See MoreWaterlox Products Appropriate for Finishing Chairs?
Comments (5)A friend of mine calls "gel varnishes" the answer to a question that no one asked. One of the vendors tried to get him to sell it in his store. He argued that gelled things are made not to soak in, exactly the opposite of what you want a varnish to do. Their response was, "Oh, we always thin it down before we use it." So what is the use? Waterlox products _are_ varnishes. The vehicle (oil) is tung oil, and the resin is phenolic. Note that varnish _made from_ tung oil is not the same as tung oil. You have to read Waterlox's technical material very carefully to catch this nuance. Most DIY varnishes are from linseed oil and alkyd and urethane resins. The choice of vehicle and resin imparts certain properties to the varnish in the same way that the flours and leavening impart certain properties to the bread that results. Waterlox is a dark amber varnish that has superior water resistance compared to its brethren. It's my understanding the only difference between the Sealer product and the Original product is the amount of thinner involved. The sealer is thinned down. So there's no reason to buy two cans, as much as they'd like to double their sales revenue. Buy the original and dilute the first two coats yourself. Long answer to say, yes, Waterlox works fine on chairs. I used it on the first chair I refinished, circa 1965. It saw hard use in my parent's house for the next 40 years until I inherited it a few years ago. It shows some dents and dings, but is still sound....See MoreWing chairs as dining chairs...anyone?
Comments (23)I use one of my two matching antique wing chairs regularly as a dining chair. Here's a really old photo preparing to host thanksgiving on our first year after the whole house reno. You can see that I brought the other wing chair from the LR to anchor the far end of the DR and add more seating. My 8 y.o. son loves to sit on the near end in that chair. He sits up on his leg though to get higher on the chair, but he still looks too low. I sometimes sit there during dinner parties and find it uncomfortably low. Also, I can't sit upright easily as the chair is so deep I can't sit against the chair back. I try not to place guests there because of this. I love the look of wings in a DR and only keep the wing there out of necessity. I don't really have enough room in my FR or LR for them after we reconfigured the rooms during the reno. Plus, I don't have enough dining chairs so this arrangement allows me to temporarily keep the wing chairs until I find a couple more matching antique dining chairs....See MoreLeather chair arrived with defect - is it appropriate to ask ...
Comments (21)"Rockmanor, did you go through a lot of rigmarole before you finally decided to live with your issues? Did you contact your retailer, or H&M directly?" I called & emailed the retailer (in another state) about two of the pieces. One was also soiled in delivery, and I did speak with the delivery service about that after calling the retailer. I emailed several photos of both pieces which I understand were shared with H&M. The most generous offer was to return one item to H&M for repair and wait approx. 8 - 12 weeks for its return. Given my prior experience with repairs by other furniture manufacturers that held little appeal, especially after being told that the other item's defect passed their standards and that there was no guaranty that the color would match exactly. I could not see the point in being inconvenienced by the pick up/delivery and loss of use for 2 - 3 months only to most likely be unhappy with their solution. In addition, I was lectured by the retailer about not handling the delivery issues properly. When a subsequent delivery was made (& I'd hoped to cancel that order, but was told it was too late), I attempted repeatedly to get the delivery crew to either wear gloves or wash hands - they refused. As it turned out, the problems with those items were not related to the delivery. Since it had been made clear that I was too picky before, I did not pursue remediation. Perhaps other people would not be bothered, but it bugs us....See MoreWendy
