2016 soil samples - would love any advice

Hello,

Long time lurker; second time poster. I am in St. Louis, MO, Zone 6a. I need some help with my lawn regimen, please. I have approximately 2500 sq. ft. of some amalgam of grass, weeds and dirt (not even sure I can call it soil). I inherited my house from my grandparents, so the property has been in the family since 1978; same as me. As a kid I remember the lawn in OK shape; my grandpa even grew some grapes. Lawn care was never top on their list, nor mine until recently. Now, with a wife, 6 month old son and two dogs, it's time to attempt having a lawn that my son can roll around in, play catch and dive for the fly balls on!

I had Scott's Lawn Service for the last couple of years and recently cancelled. I tend to have a pretty good amount of weeds. At one point, the yard was all zoysia. Now, there is very little zoysia, and have been told the rest is a fescue. It seems to grow in clusters and at completely different rates.

I am ready to put in the effort and money I need to begin amending my soil, just need some tailored guidance based on the information below.

There will be a multitude of questions coming, so please be patient with someone trying to make the most of their apprenticeship...

Front yard soil is from Mars while the back yard is from Venus. Never seen that before. I'm sure morpheus has, so I can't wait to see what he sez.

The really tan parts are likely the remaining zoysia.

What is the shade situation? Can you get a picture of the front from the middle of the street and something similar in the back so we can see trees and shade producing buildings, etc. I'm hoping you have enough sunlight for Kentucky bluegrass. KBG will be nice to play on and fill in if after wear and tear. Fescue is similarly nice to play on except it won't fill in when it gets torn up.

In the mean time it never hurts to apply organic fertilizer. I would wait until the initial fast spring growth is ending and put that down. Early May is roughly about the right time for that. The reason for the organics is to improve the population of microbes in your soil. Your organic content up front is great, so let's feed those guys. The back can use a little more organic content, so if you were not inclined to use organics, I would push you to do that.

I am from the Lou as well. I was just at a longstanding lawn center today getting some advice and the gentleman I was speaking with was talking about his zoysia lawn and the rebuild he and a number of his customers have been going through. He stated a lot of the mature Meyer zoysia lawns (from the 60s) have gotten a diseased resulting in lawns dying off. He and a lot of their customers have re-sodded segments with Zenith zoysia and then he has been plugging out of the zenith to re- establish his lawn. Just a thought.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for nudging me via message! I always do a flat read, then go back and compare previous years. So let's begin... Exchange Capacity: 6. Compared to last year's 9, I'm going to say you've probably got some soil variances in your lawn. This one says sandy, the 2015 said sand-silt. We'll run with sand as it's safe to do so. OM 3.9: Up from 3.1. You're moving into the Good range, so keep doing what you're doing. 0.8 is a significant one year change. pH 5.8: It nudged a bit, but less than I would like. More down under Calcium. Phosphorus 179: Not appreciably different from last year, and still very close to the optimal 200 (there's a lot of give). I'm going to recommend ignoring this as it's not a problem, but if you accidentally slipped in an app of starter fertilizer around May 21st, I wouldn't object. It's not necessary, however. Calcium 51.2%: A little lower than optimal. I can't remember if we applied Ca last year, but we definitely need to again. We use calcitic lime to fix this, and I recommend Encap, Mir-A-Cal, or Pennington Fast Lime. Recommendations below. Magnesium 13.3%: Nose-on optimal. No Magnesium required or desired. Potassium 6.4%: Technically a bit high, but this is actually just where I like it. No potassium required or desired this year. Minor Elements: Most look fine, but boron and iron bear mentioning. Boron 0.22: Deficient, and it actually slipped from last year. We're still going to be gentle (boron gives us no choice), but this may become a habit in your soil, at least until the OM rises and helps us out. We use Milorganite as a carrier and 20 Mule Team Borax as the boron source. You can purchase 20 Mules at the grocery store in the laundry section. In a wheelbarrow or the like, dump the Milo. Spraying very, very lightly with water (I use a spray bottle like the kind people use to damp their clothes when they iron) will help the boron stick. Add the recommended amount of 20 Mule Team Borax and stir, spraying occasionally to get the stuff to stick to the Milo. Then apply over the recommended area. So if going for bag rate Milorganite (1 bag per 2,500 square feet), you'd add 12.5 tablespoons of 20 Mule Team Borax. Iron 177: This actually slipped a bit from last year, which is probably sampling differences. Milorganite, whenever you like, will slowly raise this, but it's not deficient. It's just a little low for optimal color. Recommendations: April 1: Apply 4 pounds per thousand square feet of calcitic lime. May 1: Apply 5 tablespoons per thousand square feet 20 Mule Team Borax in Milorganite carrier. October 1: Apply 4 pounds per thousand square feet of calcitic lime.

Sorry for the delay, Zeus, it's been a busy week for me! Your soil, off the cuff, is in pretty good shape! We'll take it line by line, but there aren't a lot of corrections to be made. Exchange Capacity 22.6: This might be a little overinflated by your calcium levels, but given your locale, I'm inclined to believe it. Iowa tends to have nice, dense soil. This is probably a dense, silty soil, perhaps with some sand and clay, and won't drift quickly once balanced. Testing every 2 to 3 years would be fine once done. pH 7.5: High, but no barrier to a fantastic lawn. We just have to adjust the resources to account for the higher pH, which is caused by excess calcium. OM 3.5%: In the Fair range. Certainly mulch mow and mow all your fall leaves, but given your EC of nearly 23, this is not a bad number. Sulfur 11: Excellent answer in optimal range. Phosphorus 96: A bit low. My target here would be around 250-260. We use starter fertilizer (just get the cheapest, they're all the same) to adjust this. Recommendations below, and we won't quite finish in a year, I don't think. Calcium 76.6%: High. Optimal in your soil would be around 60%, but this isn't a problem except in the sense that your pH rises a little too high. We can work with it, which is good--there's no easy way to get rid of this much calcium. Magnesium 16.9%: A tad high, but not unreasonable. Target in your soil would be around 10-12%, but this won't cause any problems with all that calcium kicking around to reduce the negative side effects. Potassium 1.6%: It's not quite as bad as it looks, but it is a little low. We use potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash) to fix this, which you can get from some garden or landscape stores, or they'll order it for you. Minor Elements: Most are fine or a bit high (but not a problem). Boron's a tad low, but let's ride it for this year as it's certainly not a problem. Iron levels are mentioned below. Iron 126: A very nice number, but at a pH of 7.5 it's going to be heavily bound in the soil and won't produce great color. Whenever you like, you can use Milorganite to feed the lawn and very slowly raise your iron levels. Recommendations: Now: Feed the lawn with any starter fertilizer at the bag rate. June 15: Apply 2 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet. September 1: Feed the lawn with any starter fertilizer at the bag rate. October 1: Feed the lawn with any starter fertilizer at the bag rate. October 15: Apply 2 pounds of potassium sulfate per thousand square feet.

Thanks for the advice so far looking for some more expertise. I was out walking the yard and came across a patch of what appears to be different grass. Two pictures attached. It's a lighter green and is only in two areas close to each other. Any ideas? And second item is the closer I look I see a lot of brown areas sort of under the initial top layer of grass. It's visible in the pictures in the first post I made. Is this grass that is still dormant or some other issue? thanks to all the experts.

Thanks for all the comments! Every individual unit can be bypassed - with the exception of the pre-filter and pressure switch being tied to one another. That's by design, but I'm considering switching it. I didn't note it on the diagram, but thank you for pointing out the supports. The larger red and blue (copper) pipes will be supported at the corner where they first drop down. There's no drywall on the ceiling in that room right now, but when I complete half a dozen other projects down there it will be, and that will be above the drywall. Same thing with the pressure relief valve. Everything else I figured would be okay, except the pressure relief valve and prefilter.... Still thinking about how to do that in a way that looks decent. Drains are just going to be 3/4" PEX, so I didn't bother modeling them. I was just going to use tees to connect them all to a single drain line. Though about using some check valves, but I don't think it will actually be necessary. I am curious about how the aerator discharge and the filter/softener backwash will affect one another, but I don't expect any problems. Will labelthe thing after a few revisions and repost. Sorry about that! I agree with you on the CPVC valves. I'm aiming for no metal components before treatment is complete to reduce corrosion. It would probably take decades before I noticed the difference, but I am hoping that these are higher quality valves and will last longer. The aeration tank is pressurized - I'm thinking 60-75 psi as the range. As far as a sparger, I'd definitely prefer to use one! I'd read that they will stop up very quickly with higher iron levels in the water. Any thoughts on that? For the resin... Ya, if I don't hear back from them before I'm ready to buy I'll definitely be looking elsewhere. My backup is Resintech's CG10. The UV system is actually already installed. Old owners put it in because of a failed bacteria test with water from a bathroom faucet. I'm pretty sure it was introduced after the well. I'm planning on shocking the well when I do all this and installing a new UV Bulb. When that bulb is near its end of life I'll do some tests and if everything is negative I'll remove the UV system. Yeah, this looks like two different planets. :-) Fortunately, that's workable and yeah, I've seen it before. It happens if soils were from two different sources originally, or were treated differently. No biggie.

ME 21/16: Both pretty similar, and both probably silty or having a small amount of clay. Once fixed, the soil will tend to stay put and only require testing every few years.

pH 6.0/5.6: Both a tad low, but not severe in either case. We'll fix that under Ca, Mg, and K below.

OM 8.2/4.6: Excellent/Good. With your ME, no more is required, although mulch mowing is always a very good idea.

Sulfur 13/5: Normal levels for the OM (higher OM equals more sulfur).

Phosphorus 1500/500: High in both cases, but not a problem. In both cases, however, I'd avoid phosphorus sources. The front is extremely high (but not going to cause issues). The back is just high.

Calcium 67.4/51.6: Optimal in the front, a little low in back. In back, we'll use calcitic limestone (Encap, Mag-I-Cal, or Pennington Fast Lime) to fix this. Recommendations below.

Magnesium 10.2/12.4: Although a tad low out front, it's not worth fixing and not a problem. The back is optimal.

Potassium 1.4/1.9: Quite low in both cases. We use potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash) to fix this, which you can get at most garden shops or landscape stores--or they'll order it for you.

Minor Elements: Bermuda isn't particularly demanding, and most are fine. Boron is a tad low out front, but ignorable. It's rather low out back, and I'd rather not ignore it.

Boron 0.52/0.35: We use Milorganite as a carrier and 20 Mule Team Borax as the boron source. You can purchase 20 Mules at the grocery store in the laundry section. In a wheelbarrow or the like, dump the Milo. Spraying very, very lightly with water (I use a spray bottle like the kind people use to damp their clothes when they iron) will help the boron stick.
