Belle Portugaise - How large does this grow?
Comments (15)Susan Louise is much cleaner than Belle Port, Rosefolly, not to worry. It doesn't even get PM in Mildew Valley. I seriously doubt the reported parentage that SL is a sport of Belle Port. Yes, they are similar but far from identical. Belle Port is enormous, while Susan Louise is only 12 feet tall. The bloom is not identical, with SL having fewer petals. Belle Port is a true climber, blooming on laterals. SL is a huge, Paul Bunyan Tea, with typical Tea growth tho rather bare at the base, tree-like. It really resents pruning and will skip the spring flush if you prune it. Don't bother and keep all the ratty twiggy stuff around the base or it will go bare by year 4....See MoreMy Belle Portugaise is blooming!
Comments (6)Thanks for all of the input - who knew that "once bloomers" is a flexible term, depending on the weather conditions?! It is certainly true that we have had the coolest summer here since they started keeping records in 1947 - the paper this morning said the avg summer temp in the town I live in was 64 degrees! That is unheard of. Sadly, this is not a condition I am going to be able to reproduce in the future - our normal summer heat causes many of even my repeat bloomers to go dormant, although they usually wake up and start blooming again in Nov/Dec. Meanwhile, I am admiring the Belle Portugaise blooms every day - they are one of my favorite rose blooms - they are so elegant, and they practically glow with a translucent peachy pink color. Comments (22)LOVE that structure in the photo too, Cori Ann. I can certainly see why you were inspired! I've been wondering if some sort of rose tunnel/rose covered walkway might work - I mean, running along all or part of the path, with the fence forming most of one side of it? Then Les Deux Belles Portugueses could droop and drape through the gaps and you could look up at the lovely nodding blooms and be surrounded with their perfume as you wander through... I hear the foliage is good - both plentiful and healthy; if that turned out to be so in your garden, the ladies could go on providing nice green shade along the path there right through summer, after their blooms were over. But of course I don't know if such a tunnel would work within the overall style and layout and functions of your garden, and whether you'd be able/ want to build it, etc, etc - just musing out loud really... :-)...See More1st bloom on Fortune's Double Yellow playing with Belle Portugaise
Comments (13)OK - Since i posted above we have had about 6 more rainstorms, and 3-4 days of sun. Both roses are not fully out yet, but I managed (from a ladder) to take pics a couple of days ago when there had actually been sun for 3 days in a row, and they had a chance to dry out a bit. I will post the pics in 2 comments, since Houzz seems to dislike it if I post more than 3 in one. I did not plant these roses on purpose to intermingle (growth habit and colors are so different), but they did, and I am just happy that their Spring (and only) bloom is overlapping.
