Precooking beef ribs for barbecued ribs?

Beef, not pork. I know ribs can be boiled, but I wonder if putting them in
the slow cooker (roasting, not boiling) would work as well. If so, how long? I'll plan on finishing in the oven (I don't have a grill).

I tried the pressure cooker once when I was in a hurry, and
it worked, but they looked just awful when I took them out. Followed by the
oven and the sauce, they looked less, um, unattractive, and tasted fine, but
still….
