Comments (45)I hear ya. The weather person has as much chance of being wrong as right in our neck of the woods too. lol Ok, well I do hope that is the case with the SVBM. We've had an unusually large number of birds in the yard. Robins seem to have nested nearby and I counted about 7 adolescents yesterday. Then a flock of starlings, and a pair of catbirds. They all seem to be very interested in the vegetable beds. Flying in and out of the beds with squash in them, so I am hoping they are finding bugs to eat. I don't even have a feeder up, because I didn't want to attract squirrels. I do have a number of shrubs that fruit is developing on and I think they are here in anticipation of a feast. And I seem to remember reading that birds that are fruit eaters, also eat insects. So this has been an interesting development this year....See MoreIdyll #410 Last of the berries, first white snows...
Comments (100)Happy Wednesday, everybody! Dreary and snowy here today, but not excruciatingly cold... House needs some tidying, but it's bill-paying day today (we just call it "money transfer day" - our penions get direct deposited, I pay the bills on-line. Pfft! Done in half an hour...). Thank you for your collective outrage directed toward the Phils...however, in their defence....we take turns here putting the little guy to bed (music practice, homework, bath, snack etc.) and cleaning up the kitchen. The other night it was my turn to do the clean-up. If I am sick or tired or going out, one of the adult Phils pitches in and takes my turn at whatever, and vice versa. But the other night I was not sick, or tired, or going anywhere, I was in a snit and just didn't take my turn. So....not excusable but maybe understandable...They did, however, pull out all of the Christmas decorations and help Adrian start his note to Santa and hang hs stocking (already! He can hardly wait!). I spent half an hour at the school yesterday looking for wayward mittens, snowpants (two pair gone already!) hats, fleeces etc. To no avail. His name is in everything....He came home with two pairs of the three snowpants that have gone to the school in the last week, and one pair of ski mitts without the liners...Saw the principal in the hall he asked if I had any insights on the lost stuff problem - I told him the real problem is that the kids are seven years old (grin). Busy week coming up. Today - music and parent-teacher interviews (report card was good). Tommorrow - DH has his physical in the town we moved from (can't find a doctor here) so I might tag along and shop..Friday Professional Development day for teachers so TCS has no school - he and his Daddy are making a gingerbread house, I am volunteering at the school book fair for three hours. Christmas stuff, volunteer stuff, trying to get an appointment to look at a very large old house for sale three blocks from here - likely a pipe-dream but... I will be taking out the dishes this week-end too - so a photo will be forthcoming... I hope you all have (or had?) a great Thanksgiving and are ready to leap right into the Christmas spirit! See you tomorrow... CHeers! Julie...See MoreWorkin' hard in the garden
Comments (25)Wow, lots of busy-ness in the gardens this weekend! We were no different here, and my hamstrings and hubby's back will argue heartily with anyone who dares suggest it wasn't exercise (once they recover, that is). :-) Sounds like everyone is doing well with the planting and "chores"! I finally got my veggies in this past weekend too, after we finished the new raised bed. We spread around 3 yards of mulch too...and I've been planting out flowers here and there as well. Gave a bunch of extra veggies to the neighbors Sunday afternoon when I finished planting. I'll have to post some pictures soon - the roses were budding out already! I disbud the first flush to let the foliage have more time to develop, but it was fun to see the buds coming on already. Even the dahlias we started have buds (not touching those, since I know next to nothing about them). I got those transplanted into the garden Sunday too. Jclepine, one of our dogs is named Lucy too, and one of her favorite things is to chase mice. :-)...See MoreMme Alfred Carriere - Tree Climber, Arbor or Shrub?
Comments (25)Thank you so much for both of these photos, Cynthia! I appreciate the naked photo ;-) so I can see how those canes want to grow. She's such a slender little thing for 7 yrs. I just talked to Carol at Northland, and she confirmed everything you, and others, have said about her loose, horizontal growth. She also said a little shade would be good because we have extremely hot summers. Your first photo makes me so glad I got her. I don't mind waiting for blooms. My Austin Cottage Rose sat here for 15 years before she gave me absolutely scrumptious blooms last year. She wasn't in the way, and not a priority to remove. That combo is beautiful with Grandmother's Hat and the red roses on each side. Really lovely placement. An elderberry is waiting to go in the ground here, too. I am planning to have some things on hand this year to prop up my droopers and flopers better as per your earlier thread on the subject. For anyone who hasn't read it, it's here with more photos of Cynthia's roses. Get ready to drool. My limp Austins will be standing like little soldiers this year. Well, at least they won't be crawling along the ground. I actually like a bit of loose shrubbiness. I didn't mean to get off track here, but I found that thread very helpful. I appreciate your insight about MAC and no doubt other cold zoners will also find it helpful. Edited - I just read through that thread again (supports) and realize that I had totally missed the specific paragraphs about MAC because she wasn't on my mind until just lately. What a great thread, and I so thoroughly enjoyed seeing the photos of your roses again. You mentioned a smoke bush in the same area as your elderberry. I am feeling a little like a big time gardener because in addition to the elderberry bush waiting to be planted, I also have a smoke bush waiting to go near the elderberry. If I'm thinking like you, I must be doing something right....See Moreravencajun Zone 8b TX
