Madame Alfred Carrier & Black Spot ?
Comments (45)I'm still having trouble making a decision. I'm strongly considering DEVONIENSIS but worried about the color. In some pics it looks creamy (i.e. yellow) white. I need a pink toned white; the cooler the pink tones the better. CLIMBING CLOTILDE SOUPERT would work in that spot (I've grown her before and she is one of my favorites for repeat bloom, fragrance, beauty-of-flower, and disease resistance), but I'd like something with slightly larger flowers. I also don't know how mum will react to the balling. Not a problem for me but it might be for her. CLIMBING SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON is tempting but I'm worried about the repeat bloom. I've read some bad reports on that front. What about CLIMBING WHITE MAMON COCHET? It is definately a cool pink toned white and the fragrant nodding flowers would be a plus in a climber. Is the repeat bloom reliable? How good is the vigor (i.e. will mom have to to wait 5 years for it to mature; I don't even know if she is going to live that long)? And is CWMC resistant to black spot?...See MoreRestraining Mme Alfred Carriere on pillar?
Comments (10)Have you considered Cl Iceberg? Even in my warm climate, it is MUCH easier to control than MAC. Don't get me wrong - I love MAC. We have three. One was planted to climb up a plum tree, did that, and also jumped over to the tops of 3 other trees. Got to the top of its original tree, and sent long canes from the top down to the base again, covering another huge (20 ft by 20 ft) shrub in the process. Another was planted to grow up the side of our garage. Did that, and also went another 20 feet up a pine tree next to the garage, from whence it is contemplating eating the neighbor's deck. The third one was planted (in a large pot this time!) at the base of another plum tree next to the other side of the garage. It went up the tree 20 feet, and is also now trying to cover the entire roof of the garage. I love them because they bloom for 10 months here, and get no care from me at all, except food once a year and some water during our normal 6 month summer drought. I would not ever try to "control" this rose - Jackie...See MoreConsidering Mme. Alfred Carriere and Crepuscule
Comments (18)Hi, Lois. My MAC is tough and lovely! MAC is planted over a French drain, she is in a somewhat neglected part of the garden, she gets no morning sun and all afternoon sun, she blooms late spring through late fall, she has a delicious fragrance, she gets a touch of blackspot here and there but just sheds the leaves and grows replacements, and she wants to grow big as well as beautiful. In the spring, MAC's blooms have a blush cast, especially in the bud and early bloom stage. Gorgeous! They fade to silky white. Summer through most of fall, her blush buds turn white quickly in the west sun. I've never seen a fried bloom. She does get regular water in the dry season. Her canes are pliable when young but become stiff with age. I don't grow Crepuscle but am very familiar with that lovely apricot confection. If I were choosing between the two and both were healthy and hardy in my region, I'd choose by color preference. Carol...See MoreAnyone grow Mme Alfred Carriere?
Comments (67)Yes hot indeed. We enjoy hot summers but winters cold and strong sea winds do much damage. I now have roses that can cope with such variation of heat and cold .Took me long time to find roses like horses for courses . Canadian Explorer rang from Morden research labs In Canada have a full range of great plants that are hard as iron nails .John Davis rose flowers most of summer in pink scented flows of climber 10 foot x 7 foot .Makes a good column climber .It can be left and not covered in minus 30c winters and still come back in Spring better than ever. John Cabot too makes a wide rambler on pergoda frame . With out them my rose garden would be bare or cut right back to take half summer to reach a good tall plant .Summers are 100f in July . June is best month for building in garden s. Summer goes on to end of October. Autumn tree colours November December .Worse month February . Im English used to hardly any winters and cool summers .Took some time to find my garden needs in rural wild Latvia...See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
