Should backsplash go above the hood too, or just below?

How high should the backsplash go? Help!
Comments (4)We tiled the entire wall over the range, up to the ceiling (we liked the look). The hood went up (had to, to measure/cut the chimney; we needed to know the exact height/placement), then the hood came down again for the tile install, and then back up. if we ever need or want to change the hood, we won't be limited by the tile outline. Here are a couple of pics for you:...See MoreWhen in the process should our backsplash go in?
Comments (9)I'm waiting to do the backsplash last....the cabinets are being installed this week, appliances end of week, and then template for granite next week. I will probably want to live in the almost finished kitchen for a few weeks before I decide on the backsplash - one reason, I want to see the colors in my kitchen during all phases of sunlight and darkness to see what backsplash color pattern will look best and second reason (really should be first reason) is that I am scared :-) I know backsplash can make or break a kitchen and I have seen some really bad ones (too many diff patterns, clashing with granite, doesn't match at all) so I want to make sure I do this right. Probably in about 4 weeks I will be posting pics of my kitchen asking for specific help in picking out a backsplash so be prepared everyone :-)...See MoreWhere should the backsplash end relative to hood chimney / ceiling?
Comments (8)I would stop it at the hood. I've never seen tile go above cabinets to the ceiling. Well, I have seen it a time or two and I don't like the floating look. You'll also have the floating look over your peninsula to deal with because your wall cabinet ends a bit too short of the end. You can't stop the tile directly under the cabinet with that much counter extending beyond. I might put a shelf over the peninsula and tile to the bottom of the shelf. Then put another shelf about a foot above that one. You can only do this if you have enough length between the cabinet and end of the peninsula--a 12" shelf won't work, but 15" or 18" would. You might be able to tile to the window and down to the floor to achieve this. It looks like that's what they did here. Here's another way to extend tile out to the surrounding mouldings by adding a matching chair rail at the top of the tile over the peninsula....See Morekitchen backsplash and picture frame above stove under hood
Comments (9)eam44, with respect, I would never wear a Chanel suit because that just isn't me, never has been, never will be. I do, however, wear my Gap jeans almost daily, and have for decades : ) ...And that is why I changed my mind about not doing a 'feature' above my range... I saw a gorgeous tile feature that I loved, perfect coloring, and it was 'me'. The feature tile is fussy, it sits inside an inset, which is arched, and we have a deck-mount pot-filler which is offset to the inset. And our granite is busy. Way out of trend, very dated, and utterly gorgeous in my eyes. I cannot wait to have the backsplash installed now. Prior, after endless seas of plain jane subway (and our backsplash will have subway tile, BTW), I was lukewarm to despondent over the backsplash choices I had seen. meluky, if staying on trend is important to you (and that's fine if it is), don't put one in. If, however, it would make you smile every time you walked into your kitchen, and you didn't plan to sell your home in the next year or so, put one in. I agree with Momofthree Ma, "Do what you love"....See MoreCarolyn
