How high should the backsplash go? Help!

We are building a new house. The cabinets are up, the granite will go up on Friday. We have a 36" GE-Monogram induction cooktop. We plan on getting a backsplash with 4" light colored tiles. Then have a few 2" glass tiles behind the cooktop to give it a focus. The backsplash people suggested a simple design in the back instead of one with border, etc since our cabinets are minimalistic (they are a nice 42" maple with deep rose color). The granite is shivakashi.

Our hood is a GE monogram 36" stainless steel hood that goes all the way to the ceiling. My builder suggested the backsplash stop where the hood begins (about 30" above the counter top). My wife wants it to go higher possibly to the top of the cabinets. Which is better? Is it harder to install the hood over tile. Do they leave a gap to install the hood if I put the tile backsplash behind the hood?

If your hood covers the entire wall, there's no need to tile up to the ceiling. With a chimney style hood, you will want to since you can around the sides of the hood.

The hood does not cover the entire wall. It is this one.

When they install this kind of hood, is the backsplash laid fully first and then you drill on the backsplash and install on it. Just wondering.

Thanks for all the input so far! Suzannesl, yes, don't worry! The floor (and the layers underneath!) is already up. We are planning on putting tile down, likely beige. We are raising the existing cabinets but I'm planning on refinishing them with the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformations, likely in Espresso, and adding brushed nickel hardware. Hmm, interesting comment on the mix of colors - I didn't think about that and will have to take another look.

I completely agree with you, jerzeegirl. Isn't the whole point of a backsplash to protect the wall behind the countertops? I think it would look even siller to have that much counter hanging out there past the cabinets and backsplash. But I also do think it isn't very good design to have the top and bottom cabinets not line up when all you have is a stretch of wall on the other side or some other feature that acts as a natural stopping point. So I like the idea of adding shelves to the end of the top row of cabinets. Then there is no question about where to end the tile.

OK-I was thinking the same-that it would look nicer with all of them done, but wanted some other opinions;-) And thank you, mpagmom. They are over a year in process. If you pay attention to the ceiling, you can see the leftover drywall work from us having to do a complete repipe of our house. 64 holes in our whole house and it took 2/3 of my kitchen budget, so I put the cabinets on hold. Lost motivation when we no longer had the money to do my whole kitchen, but things are back on track now, so my motivation has returned:-) I should be able to have everything complete and doors hung by Sat or Sunday next week, so I'll post before and afters then.

JL: When you said "also quartz" you are implying that you are using engineered stone for a countertop and backsplash. There is no such thing as "granite composite" no matter what the marketing people for the sink manufacturer says. It is all quartz and resin; granite has too much mica and feldspar to be suitable for filler. I'm not aware of any "composite granite" countertops made of the same material as the quartz composite sinks. You must design and install your splash in conjunction with your appliance manufacturer's instructions, particularly if your splash is engineered stone. Contrary to engineered stone manufacturer's claims, estone is 66% quartz and 33% resin. The nonsense about 95% quartz and 5% resin is a measure by weight, which is meaningless, not by volume. Resin is heat sensetive and it makes up a third of your splash.

Hi, I have a similar chimney style hood. The hood was installed first and then the tile was installed around the hood and cabinets, up to the ceiling. I think you can also have the tile installed first and then the hood on top of it.

We tiled the entire wall over the range, up to the ceiling (we liked the look). The hood went up (had to, to measure/cut the chimney; we needed to know the exact height/placement), then the hood came down again for the tile install, and then back up. if we ever need or want to change the hood, we won't be limited by the tile outline.
