llucy....the term you hate is "tighty whities", not tidy. It's a humorous descriptive word, intended only for a laugh. Just like seeing a man in tightie whities in a movie or on TV....almost always meant for a chuckle. Walter White's (Breaking Bad) numerous appearances in his white underpants were a little visual comedy . :-)

I cannot get used to "sneaked". Where I grew up, everyone always said "snuck". When sneaked became the more common form many years later, it sounded incorrect to my ears. I still haven't adjusted to that word.

Not exactly a word, but I really detest the now all too common substitution of adjectives for adverbs. IE, "I am going to eat healthy".

Over all American speech is sounding less and less educated, even on the part of teachers, newspapers, and announcers.

klseiverd, I once was at the local library tutoring a young man in ESL. He asked me what "ain't" meant. I explained, then mentioned that he should not pick up the use of the word, since it was considered a sign of being poorly educated. The middle schoolers at the next all turned to look at me with that gaping, shocked stare when they heard that!

My dad had a cousin--an elegant, beautiful New Englander--whose nickname was Puss, or Pussy. She was a wife and mother, and known by that name her whole life. I guess she wouldn't have fared well in some of your families, but we never attached another connotation to it.

About the only words that bother me are swear words.

I thought of another one. I hate the terms "Passed" and "Passed Away" to indicate someone died. What's wrong with saying dead or died? You pass someone while walking, riding, etc., you pass the gravy, you pass the class. When you die you are dead.

My dictionary lists both pronunciations for forte as equally used. Although I know the "fort" pronunciation is the older one (it comes from the French), I've only ever heard Brits use it, and watched Americans furrow their brows in incomprehension. I'm guessing the Italian pronunciation has become preferred in so many places because it greatly narrows the possible meanings.

Rob, I get that we're talking about mostly irrational feelings about words, and I'm not trying to talk you out of your annoyance by them, but you've eliminated a whole class of nouns that are formed according to the proper rules of English. They're called "gerunds" and include cooking, reading, and flying. One could say cookery, perusal and aviation, but it could get awfully stilted.

I know a lot of people who hate the word, "moist". I don't know why, since some food is so much better moist than dried out.

I don't like the word, "snacks". SNACK, sounds sharp and truly inedible -- but find a similar word that means the same, and I'm fine.

"Moist" has become sort of a slang word when it isn't used to describe food. Check out Urban Dictionary.

I find that the phrase "thank you in advance" on e-mails makes my blood boil. It assumes you are going to do whatever you are being obviously forced into doing.

It is interesting to me how the conversation has inherently shifted from word adversion to more common words and phrases you personally dislike because of their meaning/s to you.

As to words that are universally ranked as the worst words because of, for lack of a better way to say it, mouth feel; these words tend to appear on most lists.

Supper.

Supper is a light evening meal, frequently soup, that field workers had at the end of the day before bed; having already had their dinner, or main meal, in the middle of the day.

At this point I'm almost convinced that my mother does this just to annoy me.

Me: "would you like to join is for dinner?"

Her: "well, I didn't have supper planned, so sure"

Me: "OK so we'll see you at dinner!"

Her: "so what is suppertime?"

Me: "I'm so glad you could join us for dinner"

Her: "oh yes, thanks for inviting me to supper, you know how much I hate to cook."

GRRRR!!!! I'm NOT serving supper, I'm serving dinner!!

TG, did you notice how many words on your star list are for something that's viscous, squishy or slimy? I think there's a big correlation there. While I agree that moist isn't a pleasant word because of the oy, which is a less than beloved diphthong, I actually like the sound and feel of ooze. Not the images of putrid wounds that might come with it, but the Latin Lover who oozes charm out of every pore is enough to make me ... Okay, when I went to Urban Dictionary to see what they had to say about the top most hated word, I was so disappointed! It just had a very straightforward definition of how it's often used. But since good clean sex is good clean fun, I'm not sure why signs of arousal would make the words bad...

My grandmother who grew up on a farm, was the one who first told me the distinction between dinner and supper. She still typically referred to the evening meal as supper even though she always had lunch, not dinner at midday. My father grew up in a major city and often refers to the evening meal as supper.

To me, dinner and supper have come to mean the same thing - evening meal. The word supper seems less formal, like saying lunch instead of luncheon.

TexasGem, it gets even murkier here. It used to be the three meals were referred to as "breakfast, dinner and tea" here, "tea" being an informal evening meal. Even now, if someone invites you over for "tea" they are not talking about a hot drink and a cake unless they preface it with "morning" or "afternoon". "Supper" is a light meal served late in the evening. If you're at home then supper is a tiny snack and a hot drink such as cocoa not long before bed. If you're at some kind of evening event, supper is like a buffet of small hot and cold sweet and savoury goodies.

This got my parents and me into trouble twice after we emigrated to Oz. Soon after we moved into our first house, the next door neighbours were having a party and invited my parents, and asked them to bring a plate for supper. My parents figured they were short of china, and didn't eat an evening meal. By 9pm Mom was ready to eat the seat cushions and was enlightened when "supper" was announced (though not thrilled). At the same time she found out that "bring a plate" meant "with food on it to share as in a pot luck".

A few years later a friend invited me to her birthday dinner. When I arrived about 5.30pm, she asked, "Where were you?" Turned out she had already had it at 1pm.

Rob, the "c" word is a four letter word for lady parts, usually used as a perjorative.

What's wrong with single parent? I feel I am a single parent. Single mother. I certainly do it all alone (I did when we were married!). No judging here, merely ultimately curious!

I don't like the word supper because it reminds me of 'to sup' which sounds like slurp(ing) which is kind of yecchy but it is what my mom calls the evening meal as well. I like the word dinner because it reminds me of 'to dine' which is somehow a quieter word. I know this doesn't make any sense but most of our reactions to words really don't. :)

I hate the word "whatever". Also "s_cks" , a curse word to me, but used all the time now to describe something one does not like.

I guess the term "single parent" annoys me is because you don't know why the person is a single parent. For example:

single parent - divorced with children

single parent - widowed with children

single parent - never married birth control failed

single parent - never married adopted children

I once asked my family (who use the term single parent) why they just don't say "I'm divorced or I'm a widow". They couldn't believe that i would use terms from "Way Back When":"

Ah. It's not descriptive enough. Like the word "got". I could say "I get you", but to say "I understand what you are saying" is unmistakable.

I'm a single parent, because he was and is absent in his participation, but not because he's dead. He refuses/refused to do anything other than play with the child and when the child doesn't/didn't do what the dad wanted, he goes/went off the deep end in punishment. Neither extreme is parenting. In MY estimation. I am the only one to parent in my son's life. So I don't fit in your four examples, but I will not say I am a single parent--just for you :)

Rob i'm sure not everyone is going to fit into the examples i gave because there can be so many more. But...as with any topic....what might annoy one person may not bother another.

Maybe some folks don't consider their marital status relevant when describing themselves as a "sp" ? I've known many both male and female, but I never knew their relationship history/circumstances until I actually got to know them. I seldom hear or read people describing themselves as a SP unless it relates to the topic being discussed.

I have noticed thru the years that some people will use the word ideal for the word idea. Drives me nuts...

If you live in a farming community, you do have supper in the evening. That is the way my husband and I both grew up. We seldom have a heavy or big meal in the evening. Usually at noon if the family was around. Dinner was always at noon. Remember the "Last Supper"? It was not the Last Dinner. :) Supper is usually eaten fairly early in the evening. Growing up no later than six in the evening and the same way now usually. Mostly around five in the evening.

I never lived on a farm but grew up in a small town. We alway had a huge meal at noon and 'supper" in the evening. I thought everyone did this and found out not. From the day I was married lunch was at noon and dinner at 7 or 8. It's probably healthier the other way, but when husbands don't come home at lunch, you have no choice.

The dinner/supper thing became a rural/city thing partly, as Lily said, when the husband didn't come home at midday, but even before then among the upper crust who partied late and slept late. Dinner (the big meal and its name) moved from sometime past noon to 4:00 p.m., then 6:00 p.m., then 8:00 p.m., leaving supper to be one of those late at night things, taking the place of evening tea, which used to be served at 9:00 p.m.

I lived in Mexico for awhile with the city very much still on a siesta based day. Breakfast was in the morning, work/school was from 9:00/10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., everyone went home for dinner. Work/school recommenced at 4:00 p.m. and went to 6:00-8:00 p.m. Supper was served between 9:00 and 10:00, and parties started anytime from 10:30 p.m. on. Coffee/tea breaks split the work hours. It's not nearly as productive a schedule, but much more civilized.

Seems everyone says it and waits for a reply as though they are making sure so they can talk even more if you should dare say no.
