Replacing doorknob and trim for mortise lock
Comments (6)Hi, There's a good chance that the knobs are steel and were originally plated (brass or copper finish). With the plating worn off, the dark finish you are seeing is dirt and rust. If you soak the knobs in lacquer thinner and scrub with a wire brush or coarse steel wool, you may reveal the steel and remnants of the plating. Test with a magnet to determine ferrous metal content. Lots of very cool knobs and plates are sold on ebay. Search for antique hardware, then refine by going under doors/door hardware section. The only thing to watch for is that the spindle/keyhole spacing is the same as your old locks. Occasionally, the spindle sizes vary, but mostly they are around 9/32 for interior doors. Comments (11)Les, thanks so much for the advice. Much appreciated! Awm03, thanks! I love the new door. It looks richer in person than the pics show though. I am glad you voted for #1 as well. I really like it. LOL. Yes, I asked for paint suggestions for outside a little while back. I finally made a decision and started painting and then morning sickness hit hard! LOL. I have never had it so bad with my other 4 pregnancies. Anyway, it was put on hold a while and I am just now up to starting again. I finally painted around the door, the darker green you see in the door pic. I also painted the eaves a lighter khaki green. Hopefully today I can finish up the front and post pics. The carport is completely painted! Woohoo! Lots of work there. Anyway, I am truding along and liking how it is coming together....See MoreSecure Front Door Lock
Comments (12)Dchall wrote basically what I was going to say. In real life, no one picks a lock. Life isn't a CSI episode. :) It's a smash-and-grab world. Windows are easier to get through than a locked door, plus have the added advantage of being on the side and back of your house where bad actions aren't as visible. I've put up security cameras that snap pics and send me a video of the movement when they detect motion. They work great. Hopefully I never need to use them to identify any bad guys, but I think they're more useful than any particular door lock. I have signs that say, if you're reading this, wave hi for the camera. People always look around for the camera. :) Don't know that it will slow down any meth heads but I guess hope springs eternal....See MoreHelp me choose a front door handle! Need help asap, please
Comments (7)Those selections won't work for your front door. Those are interior door knobs/levers. You need a lockset for the front door and you have to know whether you want a mortise or tubular set. If you take close up pictures of your current door, lock, and the jamb, a local hardware place would be able to tell you what you need....See Morejohnsoro25
