Are there bars on your windows? If not, don't worry too much about the locks. If they can't get in the front door, they'll come in a window. Much easier and faster to break glass than pick a lock.

Generally in residential burglary, the doors are kicked in or a window is broken. Takes too long to pick a lock. When worried about crime and attempting to guard against it, one should look at the 3-point or 5-point systems that many door manufacturers provide. Too late for you, but someone may benefit from that. Would a Ring type system be more benefit than a second deadbolt.

greg_2015, All our windows/back door are brand new and double paned. They are not fast or easy to break. No one is going to spend 10 minutes making a racket to break one. Our many very closely located neighbors would call the cops ASAP.

And just because someone could break a window doesn't mean I (or anyone) should use a lock that looks like it can be picked silently and quickly. If there are no signs of forced entry, insurance won't cover the break in.

I don't have one, but we have clients that have systems that monitor and record when someone walks up to or near the door. There must be some type of motion sensors. They get a notice on their phone and they can see the activity and speak to the person(s) and (hopefully) scare them away. You also then have a photo of the person(s).

I don't think we're meaning to say that someone should not have as good a lock set as they can get. The statistics do show that in most instances burglars kick in a garage door or a back door - takes only a few seconds. If you do not have glass sidelights on the door, one of the best things you can do is to make sure that the door and the hardware is installed with much longer screws than is typical which makes it harder to kick in.

Honestly probably 95% of residential style doors cant stand up to one swift kick.

The days of picking a lock to break-in are gone. Today’s thief is usually a druggie thug who just destroys something to get in the house. No finesse at all. The favorite break-in method in my neighborhood is to pick up a heavy porch chair and smash in the sliding glass door. You should be fine. If you have a lot of highly valuable items, add an alarm system.

Medeco locks are high security. I have them in my home. 1" deadbolt, all locks are keyed the same.

The door frame and lock strike should have 5" screws that go through the door frame, and into both studs. Several long screws should also replace the hinge side.

Unless you have bullet proof glass, they're coming through the window. The average meth head doesn't know how to pick a lock. And they really don't care whether you have insurance or not. If you're trying to talk your way out of getting that one lock, then don't get it. Get something else. They're coming through the window regardless.

Dchall wrote basically what I was going to say. In real life, no one picks a lock. Life isn't a CSI episode. :)

It's a smash-and-grab world. Windows are easier to get through than a locked door, plus have the added advantage of being on the side and back of your house where bad actions aren't as visible.

I've put up security cameras that snap pics and send me a video of the movement when they detect motion. They work great. Hopefully I never need to use them to identify any bad guys, but I think they're more useful than any particular door lock.

I have signs that say, if you're reading this, wave hi for the camera. People always look around for the camera. :) Don't know that it will slow down any meth heads but I guess hope springs eternal.
