My DIY Miele Cleaning Cycle - Some Observations
Comments (12)@ chefwong While I understand your desire to duplicate the functionality of this cycle on your W4840, that machine was not designed for this cycle. That may be why water leaked into your door - Miele made changes to the glass design in the newer W4842 and may have also made other changes to accommodate the higher water levels of the Clean Machine cycle. There are many, many pleased owners of W4840 machines that do not have issues keeping their machines clean. I remember you had a mold issue before, but if you got that under control you should be fine simply by doing regular HOT or SANITIZE washes. If you want something close to the Clean Machine cycle, just use the SANITARY cycle and throw half a load of rags in there to keep the suds down. Add citric acid to remove any calcification (if you have hard water) or sodium carbonate (wash soda) if you want to "de-gunk" your machine. Add chlorine bleach as usual to the bleach compartment. Do not use them together. I think you will find the SANITARY cycle may actually do a better job than a Clean Machine cycle simply because the SANITARY cycle runs for a much longer period of time. Give it a try!...See Morecleaning cashmere -- hand wash or dry cleaners?
Comments (6)Nope, don't hand wash 'em and don't dry clean 'em (yech, all those stinky chemicals). I machine wash 'em. Of course, I have a front loading washing machine that has a very gentle cycle that works perfectly, but I have with intense supervision done it in a TL with fair success. I use just barely warm water; a gentle, specific for wool washing powder; a cycle with enough water and very gentle, short cycle, action and I carefully pre-spot, if necessary, and always turn the garment inside out and close the buttons, if any. But before you wash the item, take clean piece of paper (like unprinted newsprint) and draw (with a pencil not a pen which could bleed on to the garment) the exact outline of the sweater so after you get it out of the washer you can turn the garment right side out again and lay it out on the outline and block the sweater back to the right size. Then let it air dry, flat. You may need a teensy bit of touch-up ironing, but that's very rare. If you want to hand wash follow the instructions for machine washing, but just gently squeeze the suds through the garment, and rinse until the water is clear. Then roll the garment in a clean terry towel and gently press the excess water out. (If you're feeling adventurous after you've rinsed you can lay the garment in the base of the tub of your washing machine and run just a spin cycle to extract excess water so as to speed up drying.) I wash cashmere sweaters almost weekly since I live in a cool climate and wear sweaters a lot and I can't recall any disaster, but it's always possible. If you're worried, started with a gentle hand wash, then move on up to popping them (one at a time) into a machine if your machine has a suitable cycle. As for washing products: I routinely use Perwol powder (hard to find in US, but great); Delicare (a liquid that works fine in fls) and Eucalan liquid. Never, ever, use regular detergent whether liquid or powder, almost all are far too alkaline for any kind of wool, including goat hair like cashmere. Comments (5)@livebetter... It looks like it does use different wash rhythms based on this video of an IQ Delicate cycle. Link below: There are longer pauses between tumble direction changes in general as compared to a "Normal" cycle. In the Delicate cycle, at first the close have more of a tumble action, then later have more of a roll action. I also noticed a change in tumble time between "tumble" and "roll tumble". Tumble lasted 10 seconds in each direction where Roll Tumble lasted 7 seconds. Pauses after the regular tumble lasted like 10 seconds but extended to like 20 seconds after a roll tumble...interesting. Comments (28)RN, the sequins and beads were sewn on to lace. They lost none of their luster in the wash. I was afraid if i soaked just the bottoms of the gowns the soaked fabrics would behave differently from the unsoaked fabrics and trims, so I pushed the entire gown into the machine for the soak and wash. Every bit of the black dirt on the hems and trains is gone. One girl was married in a garden so you can imagine what that was like, the other was married in a children's museum and the wine drips on the front are absolutely gone! I only air dried the gowns in the dryer for several minutes to get the layers fluffed, then hung them on doors to dry. That took days! I fluffed and readjusted repeatedly, but in the end both gowns are perfect and we saved hundreds of dollars. Re The cleaning and preserving: My own gown was preserved in 1968. When we opened it before my eldest dtrs wedding in 1996, all the silver baguettes my mother had sewn on my lace had turned black, and the little seed pearls had lost their luster. It was awful, completely studded with black spots, so useless for any purpose at all. For some reason, I saved it anyway! We Good luck with the project!...See Moremamapinky0
