Do you have any unique gardening/outdoor care practices?
Comments (10)I put everything from the vegetable kingdom in the compost bucket, including wet paper towels occasionally. Since I cook all things fresh the peels, ends, etc. adds up to quite a lot. Covering with a pot is a good idea. Sometimes I cover the area with a large pot saucer. I've done tea bags and just tear open one end not being sure what the bags are made of. I think they decompose as I've never found any remains when digging. I have a compost pile that I put all the plant trimmings in. I used to turn it, water it, fertilize it, etc. but that's work so now I just let it set. It goes down by about a third with each hard rain. After about 3 or 4 years I pull the stuff out from the bottom which has turned to 'black gold'. Still trying to think of something 'unique' that I do. I've mentioned the crushed ice in the king size pillow slip around my neck on a hot day.. Has anybody else tried it? It sure helps keep me going when I want to get a project done instead of waiting for morning. Also have mentioned opening a Vit/ E capsule and putting the contents on my face if I feel that it's gotten too much sun. Amazingly it takes the heat and burning feeling away. Wearing a hat and sun screen to prevent is better, but there are those few times when I don't....See MoreDo you have one "style" throughout your house . . .
Comments (37)Oakley: no Cottage interiors out here that I've ever seen. You will, however, see everything from Rustic, Country, Traditional, Arts & Crafts, Contemporary, Modern and the many variatios of stucco and adobe homes. They all usually contain many Southwestern elements, from our colors to the art and accent pieces, though. A very good friend of mine has a drop-dead gorgeous, custom Arts & Crafts style home that she's decorated with a blend of (very good, antique) Japanese, A&C and SW pieces and they all work together beautifully. Bronwynsmom: Thank you! As for that SW decorating fad that most of us out here absolutely hated, you've described it perfectly, "the phony pink-and-teal, Kokopelli themed, allegedly southwestern schlock motif-heavy fad" . And I would add to that howling coyotes and saguaro cacti (which are not even found in New Mexico and always irritate us to see on supposed NM things -LOL). We still occasionally see evidence of them, but mainly in the cheap tourist shops. Your truth-be-told about owning one of the old, beautiful Georgian Colonial, Greek and classic revival style homes in your area of the country made me smile. My DD's dream is to move to Virginia and live in a home just like that. They are gorgeous but I like and appreciate your practical take on them . . . and will definitely pass it along to DD. Comments (80)segbrown- Unless you live in Maine, you probably wouldn't recognize him. He does some residential but mostly schools and libraries and art galleries at universities and stuff. My brother, on the other hand, is all over Google. He works at Snohetta in Oslo, Norway and has won a few important competitions for his rather out-there designs. And my dad's wife is also an architect in Boston! It's nice to have architects in the family, but it really puts the pressure our renovations--- are they up to their standards? ;)...See MoreDo you have any favorite decorating books?
