Live Boldly: Unique Materials and Bright Colors This Year
A splash of vibrant paint or a swath of eclectic tilework infuses a home with personal style
Whether you are redesigning your kitchen, using tile to create art or simply making a color choice for your guest bedroom, don't be afraid to make a few bold choices. Bold doesn't mean trashy and it doesn't even mean bright and sassy. Living boldly in your designs simply means trying something different, making a choice you love even though others may not, and not being afraid to use materials in unique ways.

A bold design statement can be as simple as an original color choice for a key feature — in this case, the bubblegum-pink door. While red doors have become a classic, this tint of red is a shock and a pretty complement to the artwork.
Utilizing pink in a gorgeous, eye-catching tile design is another bold choice. The scale of this piece makes it more "modern grannie chic."
Contemporary Outdoor Fountains
This designer used pieces of landscaping glass, creating an interesting and bold look with soothing colors for an outdoor sink. This gabion is inspiration for a thousand unique ideas. Imagine the materials you could use! Moss or succulents, pieces of terracotta, river rocks or sand — the ideas are endless.
This space not only put the floor on the ceiling, but is also using a wonderful collection of mismatched chairs. Unique in both color and style, the chairs are still creating a cohesive look thanks to the color repetition of the light fixture and wood tones throughout the space.
When making bold color choices, be careful to connect them with the rest of your space. I applaud the homeowner for this brilliant, blue refrigerator. Imagine how you'd integrate it into the rest of the kitchen with additional hits of blue in the décor.
Here is a great use of color that is bold without being over the top. The bright yet soothing green on the walls is a beautiful choice. It is almost a neutral, but interesting enough to not be boring. This color goes with anything and everything while giving your space a punch.
This copper counter top is a bold choice in a sea of granite and travertine. I love the different hues and the subtle color variations.
Sometimes your bold choice has nothing to do with color or material, but a desire to simply write all over the walls. (It is natural, you know!) Painted script in a bold font is a great way to personalize your space in a major way.
