Do you have any favorite decorating books?

I really need some inspiration on how to decorate my house, so I'd like to know if you have any favorite decorating books with lots of pictures. That's how I decorated my bedroom. I found a picture I loved and tried to recreate some of the things in the room and then added my own touches. I was looking at Amazon and so many of them sound good, but who knows if they really are. Here's some of the ones I put on my "wish" list, so I'd love to know if any of you have these:

My style (I think) leans towards French/English Country. I don't want over-the-top French Country though. What style would you call the rooms in Ballard Designs? I like that also whatever it is.

I love the praying Santa! I have one that I bought from an estate several years ago, and it has a music box feature. Only problem is, I don't know what it plays 'cause it doesn't work! LOL My tree is filled with memory ornaments..the turkey bead candy cane made by my youngest son in 1st grade... the counted crossstitch pinecone by my oldest son (yes, boys can cross stitch!) 20 years ago, when he was 11...the salt dough "grumpy santa" I made for DH in the 70's when we were too broke to buy ornaments...& every year he asks where grumpy santa is, and every year we are amazed that he's still in one piece! Salt dough doesn't last very well, but this santa is 30 years old! The list goes on, which I guess is why I have 12 boxes of Christmas to store each year! We have the 12 days of Christmas, why not the 12 boxes?!!?? I didn't use even 1/2 of my stuff this year, as we have a 13 month old GD who's just starting to walk, and I didn't want to spend all of Christmas saying "ALI..NO!!!". So, we got a short tree, put it up on a sturdy short table, and now we can just enjoy her pulling up on the table, pointing that pudgy lil' finger and saying "Dat?"...so cute, and when she sees something she really likes she says " DddAAAAaaaTTttt??!!???"...music to these silly 1st time grandparents ears! Rambled on long enough...it's Saturday!!! and only 3 days to bake and wrap and finish DIL stocking and probably a million other things, but if a few go undone I'm the only one who will know...so I will take the time to savor the memories in the making, and smile at my customers, and tell my family I love them all and watch the Christmas full moon over the lake and try to remember the true reason for the season...God Bless Us, Everyone!!! Loved the animal stories too. When in England, one of my planned stops was Harriot's vet hospital. It was wonderful, fascinating...everything was just as it was when he practiced there and even had the original TV setting where they filmed. The people in the little town loved visiting Americans and would repeat that we were the reason his books become popular. A book I recommend to many is Mrs. Chippy's Last Expedition (tis a "he" though). It is about the cat on Shackleton's Antarctica expedition, brought aboard by the ship's carpenter. Written with the cat's view, has wonderful pics of the expedition, ship, men and history story of this sad event. Although a teen level book, highly read by adults and found in the adult section. Be ready for a very sad ending, but truely a worthwhile read.

The last thing I read was The Modern Home Book. Very useful book, as I learned a lot about interior design, as well as home improvement, such as how to choose the right colors, or write about what types of designs there are and how they could be seamlessly combined into one style. All in all, I didn't regret downloading it from the torrent and reading it. If you still think that downloading for free is bad, then I advise you to find more info about The Pirate Bay, where you can see the reliability and benefits of these sites.

Hey, Stargirl, Well--I always get stars in my eyes when anyone brings up French or English country and have bought lots of books (many used on Amazon, many at Borders or Barnes and Noble because I could not bear to walk out with them). The "Bringing it Home" (France, England, Sweden, Italy series by Cheryl MacLachlan are books that keep their place on my shelf and are muchly revisited. Anything by British author, Jocasta Innis is worthwhile--historically grounded but shabby-chic minded and licensed in whimsy as well. O.K. here we go:

1) "The Finest Rooms: by American Decorators" edited by Katherine Tweed. This is an old book -- but truly worth the effort to find it! Beautiful rooms -- and lots to learn!

2)"House Beautiful: The HOME book: Creating a Beautiful home of Your Own" Carol Spier. This book has SO much information and ideas! Yes. Go Buy It!

3)"Barry Dixon Interiors" Brian D. Coleman. Wonderful coloring and placement ideas. My favorite fireplace EVER is on page 123. Favorite kitchen EVER -- page 38-39.

4)"Alexa Hampton: The Language of Interior Design" Alexa Hampton. Love the dining room on page 203.

5)"Bunny William's Scrapbook for Living" and "An Affair with A House" both books by Bunny Williams. Love them to bits!

6)"At Home: A Style for Today with Things from the Past" Suzanne Rheinstein. Gorgeous photos of her own homes and her portfolio. Wow!

7)"Chris Madden: The Soul of a House" Describes her two homes -- and features a lot of her own furniture designs. Lots of good ideas. Wish she had featured more of her portfolio.

8)"Suzanne Kasler: Inspired Interiors" Suzanne Kasler. Gorgeous. and wonderful ideas for wall decor placement.

I totally agree with #2 above.

A lot of the books I have are specific to certain decorating styles, and I don't really have any pertaining to French country. For general books, I like the Domino decorating book that came out a while back. I have a book, um, can't remember the name, by Mariette Himes Gomez that I like. I love Sarah Susanka's books. To be honest, I get a lot more use from my files of pages pulled from various decorating/shelter magazines. I have files on everything from wall art to entries to color to kitchens, bedrooms, etc...

Wow, thanks, teacats. I'm printing the list!

sueb2 - I kind of wondered about buying books. I hate to spend alot of money for a book and just see one or two things I like. I also keep a file of pages, but I guess I'm getting desparate for some more inspiration. I sure wish my library had a better selection.

Ironically, because I did the topic yesterday about my kitchen, my favorite book at the moment which I need to study again is "Country Livings 500 Kitchen Ideas." lol.

It's not that rustic country either. I just got the book out again today to go over it.

I also have the House Beautiful book, and I highly recommend it.

oakleyok - I don't have many decorating books, but I do have 500 Kitchen Ideas. I actually had forgotten about it until you mentioned it, so I'll have to get it out and see I come up with any decorating ideas for my kitchen.

Msrose I just went to my library's website and placed a hold request for the House Beautiful book. I get books from all over that way. They just email me when it comes in from whereever.

The Private House by Rose Tarlow
Style by John Saladino
Timeless Interiors by Axel Vervoordt
The Home Within Us by Bobby McAlpine

These are great inspiration books. The 500 ideas was very useful for the kitchen. The Farrow & Ball book on color was helpful too. The New Bungalow Kitchen, because we're restoring a kitchen in a 1927 house. I also love Bunny Williams book about her Connecticut house.

Msrose, don't you just love that book? Years ago I subscribed to CL mag, and it got way too rustic for me and I gave it up. Now their decorating style is a lot better, and I think they give good ideas for all the different styles in decorating.

Their website is also good for inspiration pictures.
