Rooting Louis Phillipe Rose

My new friend gave me several cutting from his Louis Phillipe rose. I tried to tell him I wanted to wait until spring, but he was going to cut it back anyway, so I took them. I haven't had any luck rooting these in the past few years. Is there a trick to it? I have rooting hormone and soil, and in SC, all I ever did was stick them into the ground, but down here, it's a bit harder.
Do I maybe need to add more perlite to the soil?

I have only rooted one rose cutting. It was back when I was just getting started and really didn't know what I was doing. As such, I don't really know what I did, aside from drowning the roots after they formed. Since then, I have heard you can root roses quite easily by sticking them in a potato? Strange, I know, but some people swear by it.

Mrs. BR Cant is supposed to do very well here, and I have several on their own roots that look extremely promising. Her root system is massive. All are planted near concrete (about 6 ft. away), which is supposed to help keep any nematode populations down. It can be almost impossible to find any OGR on fortuniana, so I am planting what I want own root, and if they ever start faltering, I will either get cuttings custom grafted, or learn to do it myself. There are people that have had success with some of them on their own roots. Depends on what's going on in your yard. I've never had any issues with my lawn or any of my other shrubs, so maybe that's a good sign.

I had two LPs when I lived in Florida (Citrus county) growing side by side (I was a newbie and planted them about 2 feet apart) for years. They thrived even that close together. They put off enough scent that people noticed when they walked next to them, no bending required at all. :) They also had to be heavily pruned about twice a year. I once got a little carried away and pruned both to about a foot tall (from 6 feet). This slowed them a bit, but they bounced back and grow like mad soon enough. Both were on fortuniana. If I let them go they definitely looked wild and scraggly, albeit still beautiful, and about 7 feet tall. However, they were easy to keep trimmed into a nice bush form of about 4 feet. That's where I kept them. I never paid any attention to proper trimming, I'd just hack them until they were the right shape and height. Sigh....I miss the south and china roses.....

OK, so my 'Louis Philippe' from RVR has started blooming again, and the squirrels are too busy burying food to notice (and eat) the flower buds before they open. While certainly not single, they're not (yet?) quite like the pictures I've seen of 'Louis Philippe'. I am thinking that this is due to it being young, but I definitely notice a white eye at the center. The shape of the flowers is cupped, and on the outside does look just like 'Louis Philippe' on HelpMeFind, but it's as though someone ripped out the very center. I'm seeing two or three rows of petals on the outside, and I smell something that reminds me of Cherry Nibs (the short pieces of red "licorice" put out by Twizzlers). I DO think I PROBABLY got the right rose, being as none of the other red Chinas sold by RVR look to be a better match, but I'm wondering if anyone growing 'Louis Philippe' could "dissect" a flower and tell me if the large outer two or three rows of petals have white bases. Perhaps you can't see them on fully-double flowers, but are they there nonetheless? I'll have to take pics in the next couple of days. I notice white centers on Jardineratx's pic, and that the center seems "missing", and this is sort of how my rose looks -- except on mine, the petals it has do maintain the cupped shape found on 'Louis Philippe'. I think that Jeri's pics of 'Louis Philippe' offer a good base for how mine look -- just imagine removing the inward-folding petals, keep the outer three rows of petals, and keep the cupped shape. And when you peek into the "cup", you can see that the petals have white bases, forming a white "eye" that is mostly obscured by the cup-shape of the outer petals. That's how mine look. Well, I drove over to Hardin's in south Tampa this past Sat. and came home with a Belinda's Dream. Thanks Laura for the info about this place. I received a ton of information about roses and saw some really beautiful specimens. Thanks to you Kate for your effusing about Belinda's Dream. When Karen, one of the nursery owners picked BD as the one she thought I would most enjoy, I felt confident because of the recommendation you had given. Belinda isn't blooming right now, but as soon as she does I will post a pic. FlowerLady - beautiful pictures. It helps me to see that even though my sunny space is very small I should be able to accommodate my plan of 2 roses, even ones that can get large. I planted Belinda's Dream and scattered some zinnia seeds around her. My DH and I just pulled out a 20+year old hibiscus from this area so it was truly a blank slate. I can't wait for blooms to begin! Kay

Until you can work with them, keep them in water and in the fridge. That will buy you time.

Trim each to just below a node, about 1/2 inch. I like to use 8-12 inch cuttings and I remove most of the leaves. Scrap the green area just above and below the node with a blade until some of the green is gone and you see the white pith.

Dip in your hormone and put into sterile soil if you have it. You can microwave moist soil, covered, til quite hot and that will help sterilize it.

I do mix in about 1/3 - 1/2 perlite. Soggy soil is a killer.

Put them in bright shade and water at least every other day. Keep them moist but not sodden. If you do 10 cuttings you will get one or two to root. The last time I casually rooted LP, I had 7 out of 10 struck.

This is the BEST time of year to root roses. I have had only marginal success after the heat comes, but starting in September, the odds get better and better.

I've been wanting to try the potato thing... maybe the potassium helps.

Further tips: Some will put them, in their pots, into a plastic bag or into a clear lidded plastic bin. This helps with not having to water as often, but can lead to rot quickly, too. And overheating in our Florida sun

I find it also helps me if I remember that plants WANT TO ROOT! Keep trying and good luck!

Thanks so much! I have 7 cuttings, and two are about 15 inches tall, so I'll cut those in half and have 9 cuttings, so I'll have a better chance. They're in water right now, changing it every day. I'm going to stick them this week.
