I have painted white cabs with dark quartz in my kitchen and stained alder with carrara in my bathroom. I'm not a style maven, but I like what I like. I don't see why anyone would feel a need to match kitchen and bathroom other than each be appropriate for the particular house. You can't see my bath or kitchen from the other, thank goodness. The only reason I can see matching is if it's a new build and you get some special deal, especially with counter slabs.

I personally REALLY dislike matching kitchens and bathrooms. It makes me feel like I'm in the bathroom when I'm in the kitchen. It's especially bad when the backsplash tile in the kitchen is the same as the bathroom tile.

As far as being current, what does it matter? It won't be current in the near future. Do what you like.

I likely would never make a bathroom the same as the kitchen. With two separate rooms I get to have two different colours that I probably love equally. And get to pick another gorgeous granite , or quartz etc. There is more than one thing out there to like, so have the best of both worlds!

We just built a new house. Our kitchen is two-toned, white with dark cherry lowers. We chose to go with cherry cabinets in our bathrooms because the tiles in our bathrooms were all in the gray family so we wanted to warm the rooms up with wood. I think we would have chosen to do that no matter what our kitchen cabinets looked like. I think as long as you keep a consistent style throughout the house, it's probably better and more interesting if you don't make everything look exactly the same. Also, I agree you should just pick a wood you like and don't worry about the current trend. We just chose our dark cherry cabinets because that particular stain looked best with the dark streaks in our natural white oak floors.

Thanks for sharing everyone. I've been looking at lots of picture of kitchens and bathroom online the past few days and am getting a better idea of what I'd like to do.

Do what you love because whatever you do will be out of style at some point down the line and unless you're planning on selling within 2 years, it won't make a hill of beans. Just keep the "feel" similar. So if your style is craftsman, keep it all somewhat craftsman. If your style is country french, keep it all somewhat country french.

For example, we now have our condo on the market. Everyone thinks it's gorgeous, move in ready, etc. It can be seen HERE. Well wouldn't you know it, we have someone coming back today to see our place for the second time. She loves our place but hates that it has wood floors and not light tile (we are in FL) and she hates the granite countertops. My point being, you can't please everyone or even someone wanting to buy your place.

I would not have my kitchen and baths or multiple baths to have the same products. My builder quality home started with that and as I update them, each will be different. That's part of the fun--you can pick out just about anything! I think your designer is being um-lazy. If it was the builder, I would say he is being cheap.
