Strange noise from my pond.
Comments (20)It's not toads. Not regular ones, at least. Toads whistle to find mates but it's more of a reverberated tremolo than a whistle and you definitely wouldn't confuse the two. My wife and I had to relocate over 50 toads that had bred in puddles on our pool cover because that many toads, all calling every night, was like a coach's whistle hooked up to an amplifier. We couldn't sleep at all. So, we caught every last one of them, drove to an isolated pond 5 miles away and dumped them all in. We haven't had the problem since. The Gray Tree Frog also has a trill tone, but it's call is so powerful that from a distance, it can sound like a spooky nearby whistle. The Spotted Owl has 13 different calls, one of which has been described as an eerie whistle. If the pitch has a sudden upturn near the end, this could be your culprit. It really depends specifically what your whistle sounds like. Good luck finding your answer!...See More'strange noise'
Comments (5)They are most likely in a state of hibernation. Of course some will die but if they were healthy to begin with most will make it once it warms up unless they are injured in the fall. We hibernate our desert tortoise every year even though our climate rarely gets to freezing temps. As cold weather nears she starts eating more dead plants to clear her system and get ready for her "sleep". Once the days are sufficiently cold we put her in a crate on the rear porch. If freezing temps hit we move her to the unheated garage. She isn't completely lifeless during this time. She will move a bit if disturbed. We know it's official Spring when she awakens. She has a huge appetite at that time and will easily 3 times her normal amount that she eats during the summer. I feel bad for those Iguanas. They are not really native to Florida at all. People brought them in as pets....See MoreIt can be fun to breed your own zinnias - Part 40
Comments (109)Hi Lizzie, " Let's say it is southern blight. I managed to save some seeds from it. Are these probably diseased? " Don't discard those seeds, because you can treat them with a fungicide when you plant them. When you save seeds from perfectly healthy plants, it is still possible that those seeds could have some seedborne disease. Commercial seed companies routinely treat all of their seeds, frequently with a carefully controlled and timed exposure to heat. I assume that all the seeds I save are infected with something, so I treat my indoor seeds with Physan 20 when I plant them, to disinfect them. Physan 20 protects against a wide range of things. Some hospitals use it in their mop water, and many commercial greenhouses rely on it to help maintain a healthy growing environment. Zinnias, like almost all plants, are subject to several diseases, indoors or outdoors. Preventing diseases is just one of the challenges of gardening, but fortunately many natural processes are on your side. Sunshine kills a lot of little microscopic "bad guys".
