Strange tapping noise
Comments (6)It's disturbing when it's quiet at night, I'm laying in bed, and trying to fall asleep. But there is just no pattern to it. I heard it yesterday morning when I was getting ready for work. Didn't hear it last night or this morning. It's three taps that go on for -- I don't know -- maybe an hour or so at a time, then it stops (almost like a machine got turned off). Never really timed it. Always 3 taps, pretty regular in how they are spaced out. It's a curiousity thing more than anything else...but you know how when you are trying NOT to pay attention to something, that's all you key in on??? That's what is happening here....See MoreStrange sound from gas fireplace
Comments (0)Hello, I have researched the forum and cant find a related post. I have a 6 yr. old gas fireplace and have not had any problem with it before. Today, while I was sitting at my desk, I heard a noise that sounded like a motor or a heater trying hard to start. I did not know where it was coming from. It lasted about 30 seconds and stopped. About 10 minutes later, it happened again, stopped and about five minutes later did it again. The last time I was able to sort of hear coming from around the fireplace. I eliminated the baseboard heater possibility. The fireplace was off so I lit it for a while and now the noise has not come back after over 45 minutes. What could have happened? Is it dangerous? Thank you....See Morestrange furnace (?) noise
Comments (8)I can't blame a layman or old timer for confusing the terms when in fact years ago there were hot water furnaces. And in fact still are outdoor open system wood boilers/furnaces. You see the term furnace also depicted an open hot water heating vessel. The proper term boiler became prevalent when describing a closed system vessel. So going back to the 50's and before, when risers and open tanks were used in attics, sometimes with feeders, in fact they were "hot water furnaces" judiec, Any fix yet? Being related to an appliance with a solenoid that uses water, I'm betting on a singing PRV on the boiler or it's the tank water heater, or piping....See MoreStrange toilet noise
Comments (4)Just in case it's driving you crazy, I assume BFTGOG is "but for the grace of God go I" LOL. In my experience, banging is always in the water supply pipes, ie when the toilet flushes, the pipes literally rattle as the water comes on (or goes off) sharply. Dishwashers, washing machines and watering systems, anything with a solenoid (an electrically operated valve) are prone to cause it, as the water doesn't ease on and off like it does when you turn a tap on and off (which is much more gradual) Bad tap washers can also cause hammering (the machine gun type) or what you're experiencing, so if it's not happening now, I suspect you've fixed it. The old washer might have moved over time if it didn't used to make the noise, unless it's just gotten worse or stiffer over time...and more frequent use. You may also want to consider installing anti-hammer devices on your washer and dishwasher, you can get ones that screw in between the tap and the hot and cold water hoses.....some people fit (or the rules dictate) a "whole house" anti-hammer device which can be as simple as a tube that extends vertically from a T in the cold water, with a cap on the end. I've heard of them as short as six inches, but an old plumber told me at least two feet if not more. Air gets trapped in the vertical column and acts as a shock absorber, so when there's a "hammer" action, it cushions it. Over time, the column loses air so now and then you just turn off the water and run some water out of the system below this column, til air enters the system and replaces the air in the column. Mind you, these treatments are no substitute for keeping tap and toilet flush washers in good order....See Morepikecoe
