corner fireplace in large living room. How to furnish?
Comments (4)That sounds just like our family room in size, shape, and corner fireplace (which was a real challenge for me to figure out and in the end I needed a decorator to do it.) Here's how our designer arranged it (and by the way, he said to have a huge area rug positioned just as you have yours): Going around the room, starting with the long wall directly to the left of the fireplace wall: Wall to left of fireplace: A pair of wingback chairs and ottomans with a round tea table between chairs. These are angled toward each other of course but they back to the wall. So, pretty much, they are ignoring the fireplace. Corner fireplace. Wall to right of fireplace: TV cabinet (or, your piano). This wall has an exit to the foyer, so the next grouping of furniture begins several feet inward from it. Long wall to right of TV cabinet wall and opening to foyer: Sofa, flanked by a large trunk on the left side and an end table on the right side, and of course a coffee table. On the left end of the sofa, at a right angle to the sofa, a small occasional chair. So sofa and occasional chair "share" the trunk as an end table. Wall to right of that (which is basically mostly opening into the kitchen but has some small wall area: Another wingback chair at a right angle to the sofa. So sofa and wingback share the end table. Right now all the furniture is either being made or recovered or in the garage, as floors were just redone and we're painting etc., but prior to that I had it arranged this way with existing/old furniture, and it really looked good. I thought I wouldn't like ignoring the fireplace by not having furniture directly centered on it, but really it does not feel like it's being ignored. Have to find the area rug now but need to cool it on the money expenditures for a bit. Hope this helps!...See Moremoving- fitting a large couch into small living room
Comments (11)If you want to provide other seating in your living room, you're going to need a different couch. Is there another room it could go in--for instance, if you have a kid's room, he or she would probably love to have it be their bed/reading nook/play area. Also, ask yourself where people congregate in your house when you're entertaining. If everybody always goes in the kitchen anyway, why spend a lot on living room seating? If you buy a smaller couch, then bring a couple of dining room chairs into the living room when people want to sit there. Not every occasion has to be filled with comfy, sink-into-it furniture, and dining chairs are really easy to move around. Don't have a dining room? Great. Buy a couple of dining chairs in good structural shape at the thrift store, paint the frames, re-cover the seats, and have them stay in the living room for extra chairs. They don't take up a lot of visual or physical space. You are at an exciting point, Judy! You now have the chance to exercise your creativity in a big way. Comments (8)I think your choices are great, including the idea of using a wicker chair. Of the two tables, I like the slight industrial goofiness of the second one. The other is "nice", that one has personality. I think you might take other pieces of inspiration from that fabulous room. A kilim rug? Of coure a big kilim is no going to come cheap. Jute would also look good, if you prefer plain. But not if you have a cat. Think of giving books a strong presence in your room too, they speak of the people who live there. And consider looking for a piece of sculpture -- again, possibly expensive, but not necessarily....See MoreLiving room grey and pink- need help with the right sofa
Comments (27)Beverly, I like the look you created. However, I just got the wall painted. It is a high ceiling so I cannot repaint myself. It is sand color (Wise Owl by Kelly Moore). I am hoping for the grey sofa, sand walls and brown floors to be the neutral colors that will not stand out. Only the blush/pink accents to pop. I did the opposite in the other room with brown floor, grey walls and brown sofa. and teal color for pop. Will light grey sofa achieve this goal better than dark grey?...See Morepowermuffin
