Wal Mart and Eggs
Comments (36)My chickens lay various sizes of eggs, from large to jumbo, some double and triple yolk eggs. Not that I have any choice in the size of egg they lay, that is dependent partially on the breed of chicken and the rest is, I guess, up to nature. I have one Barnevelder who lays jumbo eggs or larger and she's been doing that for all eight years of her life. She doesn't appear to be the worse for wear and it certainly didn't shorten her life because she's one bossy old biddy, I only have one hen older than she is and both of them still lay eggs, although only a couple per week and none in the winter. Here eggs are cheap, I can get large eggs at Aldi for 47 cents a dozen. They're more expensive at WalMart and Meijer, they both charge 49 cents a dozen for them. I can get Eggland's Best or Happy Hen, various "cage free", "free range" or organic for varying prices up to $5.00 or so per dozen. For a few weeks there was a limit. I sell eggs to the B&B across the street when they have business and they give me $2.50 a dozen for my extra large/jumbo eggs from my happy cage free hens. They are no longer allowed to free range because I keep losing chickens to the neighbor's dogs, the resident eagle pair, the owl that lives in the barn and various raccoons. Now they have a movable fenced area, and are only allowed out while I am there to supervise. Milk is pretty cheap here too, if you want the regular run-of-the-mill big box milk, it's about $2.49 a gallon. I buy my milk from a small local organic dairy and so I pay $4.99 a half gallon. Since my latest bone density test my doctor tells me to drink more milk. Since I don't drink alcohol and have given up my much loved Diet Coke, I figure I can afford the splurge of milk I actually like. Plus, I don't have to go to the "big" stores to get it. Hilhof's says they are not interested in expanding and can't produce enough for a big chain store to distribute, so the only place I can get it in town is one little gas station/convenience store, quick in and out! Comments (0)At the one by me at least. I don't know if every Wal Mart has this deal. Also, this isn't a black friday deal. This is available NOW. I just wanted to let everyone know about this deal, especially with the holidays coming up. Normally games cost $60, but at Wal Mart you can get them for $50. Some things to note though. In my experience, this deal only applies to physical copies of the games, and I've only seen the deal with first party Nintendo games (in other words, games made by Nintendo themselves or by developers that they own). So, if you or someone you know loves these games, and you're looking to save a few bucks this year, ENJOY!...See MoreUnnamed Hydrangea from WalMart, any guesses as to what cultivar?
Comments (4)Interesting about the "more than one cutting in a pot" to achieve more than one color, that hadn't occurred to me. Indeed, my WalMart plant appears to have six, suspiciously evenly spaced, vertical and parallel stems! I seem to recall that a few years ago macrophylla (and hybrid) cultivars (grown for landscapes, not "florist" hydrangeas) started showing up in nurseries that did in fact have muti-colored heads but the cultivar names escape me. Did I imagine this? - or was it another grower manipulation and the flowers ended up all the same color once established in the garden?...See MoreWent to Wal-mart a little bit ago and saw
Comments (24)I think so many people have gotten used to quite warm winters that they no longer register real cold as something dangerous. I'm pretty sure that around here, many people no longer have warm winter clothing. I know that surely wasn't true when we were a zone 5A (instead of our current nearly zone 7), temps regularly went well below zero--30 below Christmas eve 1983, though that was exceptional-- with daytime temps that never got out of the low teens. School rarely closed, certainly not for cold temps, and they used to put chains on the school buses if it was snowing--steep, curvy mountain roads. Now schools close if it looks like it's going to be too cold--mid teens maybe?...See Moremamapinky0
