Wal-Mart Dendrobium...can you believe I think it has a virus???
Comments (23)Hort, who are these professionals? You will be hard pressed to find them. I've been trying to grow things for 37 years and still plants cark it. That is why we need an orchid forum. Sometimes you will find in posts little hints that make a difference. Anyway, it all comes down to conditions, conditions, conditions. Your Wal-Mart Dendrobium is probably a hard-cane, i've got about thirty of them and not many people grow them around these parts because they are considered "Difficult" . As for the disease, your plant is just showing what happens when conditions do not suit. I had one that grew too big, thought i would trial it outside a glasshouse and put it in a sheltered position of the front porch, sheltered position, morning sun. It declined! Moved it to my shadehouse. It declined more and then died. Your plant has declined to such a point that perhaps you should discard it and start off with a new one. These are the "weeds" of Florida, Hawaii, Queensland, Australia. They like moderate humidity, warmth, even watering, though slightly less in winter and sunlight filtered by some like shade-cloth. How can i tell you how to grow them seeing my total orchid experience is here? That is the real problem with orchid growing, you have to do some research and follow that up with some interpretation in relating what you read to your growing place(s). Even then many you try will just die....See MoreLost Child in Wal-Mart
Comments (7)I am glad that the child was found and congrats to you for taking an active approach! I get so tired so the "who cares" or "whatever" attitude that too many people have today. I have dealt with Wal-Mart on the policy end of things and let me tell you it isn't pretty. I trained service dogs for special needs children for a several years and, as you may know, all public places (for a few exceptions of wildlife sanctuary and churches) are required by federal to allow such animals into their stores and many states (such as mine) have the same laws for service animals in training. ANYWAY WM was/is notorious for not having education employees on these laws and 99% of the time you are stopped and told to get the dog/animal out of the store. Most of the time when explained everything is fine but other times it doesn't matter, police are called, and it is a big hassle (police are sometimes worse educated on the subject than the employees). Let me saw now that (in my experience) WM doesn't do anything unless it has too and after several lawsuits (harassment) many stores have a small "service animals permitted" sign on their entrances and others (like the ones here) have very large "service animals welcome" sign posted (thanks to new lawsuits). I have learned that if you want anything to happen within WM you have to hit them either in their wallet or on the image (or both!). I would organizing a group of concerned citizens and giving yourself a name, then write too and/or call WM and voice your concerns. If they don't listen or (worse) don't act get involved in the media. Your local news station is going to eat up the idea of a big bad stores being a dangerous place for children and you will probably be able to get some interviews (also with the paper) have a rally, go door to door and get signatures, rally to get national attention (like Good Morning America, etc). Once they get some spot light WM will make a policy but it is still hard to make sure that they reinforce it and may take a watchdog group. Good luck, I applaud you!...See MoreDid I kill 2 of my adenium's(desert rose from wal-mart)?
Comments (16)Robbie, When you prune it's normal for the stem to die back to the next bud where the new apex will start growing. Nothing in your photo really raises an alarm from what I can see. There will be buds starting to swell soon along the top of the stem. Depending on location, time of year, amount of sun, etc etc you might see buds in another week. Might take a little longer since they are indoors. randy...See MoreI can top Wal Mart episodes :o)
Comments (55)I shop at the local Walmart for all the staples because the same items in the higher-end grocery are ridiculously high. But there are some items in the higher-end store that I buy because the quality is superior and I am blessed in that I can afford to do it if I desire. While I do see customers at Walmart that appear in financial situations that would be considered poverty level, I don't assume that they are "sketchy". I see an awful lot of high-end vehicles like Mercedes and Lexus in the parking lots of Walmarts. And I'm adding this edit because it occurred to me that I might come off to some people as "sketchy" because I don't wear high-end clothes and shoes when I go shopping. I also don't wear a lot of expensive jewelry or carry a high-end purse or drive an expensive vehicle. But it's not because I don't have the money to buy better, there's nothing at a Walmart that if I wanted I couldn't afford to pay for it cash. It's just not my style. Just because my appearance is doubtful to some doesn't mean that I would ever dream of doing anything "sketchy". I used to know of a truck stop where they served country-cooked southern breakfast - mostly truck drivers but also a lot of locals. My sister worked there at the time and she pointed to a man wearing bibbed overalls and said "you'd never know by looking at him, but he's a millionaire". There are very poor people in poor clothes that wouldn't do anything "sketchy" if you paid them. There are also people who live high on the hog who are moral pigs....See Morearkansas girl
