Just redefine your terms and adjust your "farmhouse" design inspirations to include wood tones. If you are only watching Joanna Gaines that's all youre going to see- and want. However, there are plenty of other takes on "contemporary farmhouse" out there. I honestly am not getting why browns/beiges/greiges are ok for painted surfaces, but not the same color in a wood stain. Yellow-golds, grays and whites are classic .... would fit quite nicely with your ca. 1980s gold toned wood. Re above statements that white trim will never go out of style.... well ya, some truth to that but the drab colorless interiors, the monotone white on white will. Mark my words, people in the not too distant future will be cursing the latex paint that soaked into the pores of their brick and caused it to spall, wondering "what were they thinking." Lets not forget that there was a time when people thought that a popcorn ceiling and metallic blobs of paint sponged onto every conceivable surface was a good idea!

I absolutely agree, mid century modern is an ambiguous term. So is transitional. If someone asks for MCM we know what they want. Low, sleek furniture with mid-tone exposed wood; glossy surfaces, maybe a little plastic-y; saturated colours. The difference with Farmhouse is that it is so specifically tied to an occupation and lifestyle. If someone asks for "the style that would typically be in a lawyer's house" how do you help from there? At first, I did understand the OP to mean Modern Farmhouse. And I agree, we have a broad idea of what that is but I do think it is very open to interpretation, more so than other styles. Then s/he clarified "...type of trim that [is] typically in farmhouses..." That's what I reacted to, because I took him or her at his or her word. And I thought it was important to note that no such thing as a "typical farmhouse" exists. It is academic though. I believe this family can and should have a home that they find beautiful no matter how it is labelled. It's my own problem that the label bothers me, and I know part of what bothers me is the idyllic stereotype that is perpetuated by "Modern Farmhouse." Is it made worse because agriculture is being continuously undermined and real farm families are losing their homes and farms everyday? Probably. "I know a wood chimney hood would look best" I am not convinced that is the case. It depends. And it has nothing to do with whether the decor is "farmhouse" or not, as there are farmhouse kitchens with metal hoods and farmhouse kitchens with wood hoods. I think a wood hood surround looks good if it is large, and how it is designed and proportioned is crucial to being able to carry it off. If it is just 30" wide I would only do stainless steel hood. Also, you have to be careful with a wood hood that you do not create a big wall of unrelieved cabinetry. It is nice to have a stainless steel hood as a relief to the eye of lots of cabinets. Also, it is a problem that sometimes wood hoods are not made deep enough front to back, but are made shallowly to save money. And finally, wood hood surrounds are not as easy to clean as stainless steel which are just a wipe to clean. Having said all that, I have seen some gorgeous wood hood surrounds, but it really must be part of an entire design, and the OP has said nothing about her kitchen design, kitchen size or any of her choices. If erring on the side of caution, I'd pick a stainless steel hood.

Traditional ? you mean true divided windows where each piece of glass was installed between wood muntins? I can't imagine you could even buy a window like that...maybe at a salvage shop. My experience is with Anderson 400 which offers is the look of true divided windows, are energy efficient, and avoids the snap in/snap out vinyl grids, that break and leave holes in the window frame. K H, tell your husband to take a look...he needs an introduction to muntins in modern age. He won't freeze with these. My neighbor mowed his lawn last evening while we were having guests for dinner.
