Home rendered lard question

I have made many a pie crust using store bought lard in that green box.... I freeze the lard and then grate it using a cheese shredder then mix it with the flour.

This time, I want to use home rendered lard. The butcher gave me 4 lbs of pork fat that boiled out to about 1 lb of lard.

The problem is that it is not as hard, even if I freeze it, as the store bought (hydrogenated) lard. Is there a different method to make the pie dough this way?
