New to Roses and have Questions (pics)
Comments (6)If the last one does not spread its canes for much over 6 feet long it could be a rambling type rose. It could also be a ground cover type rose. Some of those ground cover type roses even creep along and where ever the ends of their canes touch soil, they root. If that happens simply cut the cane, and you will have just allowed the new rooting to become another independant rose plant. As far as the sunscald advice goes, simply move the rose to the east side of a tall enough structure so that the rose receives morning sun and afternoon shade. Also remove the affected leaves, and discard them in the trash. Then clean the pruning tools in a manner that decontaminates them just in case it is some form of contageous disease. To go even further, you could treat the leaves and stems remaining on the plant with anti-fungal and anti-pest sprays and powders. Repeat that treatment as directed, until the rose begins producing new leaves which remain healthy looking. If your climate has been very humid this year, it would not hurt to treat all your roses as just described. Also when watering, avoid letting the leaves get wet. In morning dew on the leaves situations, monitor them to be sure the leaves dry by at least if not before midday. If not, move them to an area where they will receive more air circulation. Every thing you discover that works for your roses while they are potted should help you determine where they will prosper best after being planted....See Morenastiest rose I have EVER seen.
Comments (73)My Abe Darby has a sweet fruity smell but my soil is alkaline. Glamis castle was very bad smelling indeed and thorny and runty. I wanted Jaques Cartier to grow for me so much but every spring the frosting pink flowers had great big proliferations in each center. It broke my heart. It was not the nastiest rose ever, but it was the most disappointing along with the semi double orange I received instead of Heaven on Earth. Someone said to try patience and see if it would outgrow it, but it never gave me anything but the scrawny orange flowers. Finally, I gave up. Usually my SdLM is looking fine, but in the wet year of 2012, it looked wretched indeed and I wouldn't like to live with it if it was always like that. Same goes for Madame Issac P....See MoreJ&P email with new roses! Do you have Bliss or Oh Happy Day?
Comments (15)Bliss arrived from Roses Unlimited 5 weeks ago at 10" tall & wide. (Wanted a pair, but Pat only had one.) Repotted into a 3-gallon, it's grown well in that short time. Just went out to measure & it's now 16" x 16". Semi-glossy leaves healthy no spray through hot days of mid to high 90's, overnights cooling to 70, high humidity & frequent rain. After a week, a terminal bud began to develop & opened 10 days later (noted on my calendar, lol). Creamy pink infused with apricot, that first 2" flower held fresh for 9 days. Pretty amazing, considering how often I nose nuzzled the many baby petals to sample its perfume, catching new nuances of complexity each time. A mixture of ripe non-citrus fruits with a touch of vanilla cream, similar to fruit nougat, in a soft swirl of floral minibursts my memory associates with ylang ylang. More than a sensory delight - a spiritual uplift. This rose is well named. Back to earth - began pinching for structure after that bloom indulgence & the baby rose responded with new branching. Allowed only one of those side shoots a single bloom (so I could bliss out again). Snapped off at the peduncle base as the sepals descended, that bud went into a small blue bottle vase & accompanied me from desk to night table for several days, till it dried in perfect form in the air conditioning. Even dried, it retained the ghost of its perfume. That bloom opened to 3", more petal & fragrance packed than the first. Dutifully nipped several more buds to direct the rose's energy into root & branch growth. Measuring Bliss' current stature a few minutes ago, spied a new bud just beginning to form along a side branch. Compelled to let that one bloom, too. Having only spent 38 days with Bliss as of today, have to say I'm besotten. Sue...See MoreWhat NEW plants have you bought this Spring? pics please!
Comments (35)Eryn, thanks. Too funny on tongue twister!! They were a birthday gift a year or so ago. They came in a box of six, one was broken in shipping :( There is a small drainage hole, pea size. I notice that the pots are slightly rounded, so I have to be careful to not let plants grow in too long otherwise they will be difficult to get out. I don't know which seller it was, but I know they were from Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/LUCKEGO-Ceramic-Flowing-Serial-Succulent/dp/B078VNB2RD Isde, very nice, I like all the spikes!! I don't believe I've ever seen some of those. Neat!...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
