What's on your Father's Day Menu?
Comments (20)Well I was going to have a pot roast and a new recipe, a Banana Cream Pie from a site I just found last night. It looks fabulous. BUUUTTT, as I just started heating the oven to stick the roast in, and was crunching the graham crackers for the pie, I heard a loud POP noise, and looked at the oven and saw it glowing red and sparks flying on the inside. Opened it up, and my element at the bottom of my oven was bright red and sparking, ready to catch fire. So we grilled out and had BBQ chicken, macaroni salad, garden salad, and green beans. And an ice cream cone from the freezer, lol. Oh well. It was good. Happy Father's Day to all the deserving men out there. Comments (13)Sauerbraten, red cabbage w/apples & onions, mashed potatoes w/gravy from the sauerbraten, fresh green beans w/bacon, & Dutch apple pie for dessert. Dinner will be later this evening so about 1:00 p.m. I'm putting out appetizers of crispy mini-lobster tacos w/fresh salsa & a fresh fruit/cheese platter. I wouldn't normally do the lobsta w/sauerbraten later but our guests expect some form of lobsta when coming to New England. /tricia...See MoreWhat Is Your Christmas Day Menu?
Comments (20)For Prime Rib this is the most amazing recipe and may be the one mentioned, it will scare the heck out of you at first but follow the rules!!! On another forum I was on for years so many people used this recipe it became one of the ones that stayed up all the time. So it is very very tried and true!! Prime rib Cover prime rib with olive oil. Press on garlic pepper/kosher salt seasoning (the kind with big chunks of salt, very coarse pepper) (Or use the McCormick Montral Pepper blend) Preheat oven to 500 degrees F. Yes, that's right, 500 degrees. When it's HOT HOT HOT, put the uncovered roast inside. DO NOT OPEN THE OVEN even once during the entire process. Leave the oven turned on for 8 minutes per pound of roast (minimum of 40 minutes). Then shut the oven off and leave it in there for a TOTAL of 2 hours (combined HOT time and REST time) Take it out and cover it with tin foil. Leave it rest on the counter for 15 minutes before cutting. It will be perfectly dark pink in the center, juicy and flavorful. During the time that the oven is turned on, you will hear sizzling and popping and smoke may even come out of the oven. Do not let this alarm you. Shut the kitchen door and keep the smoke alarm in the house from going insane. The smell will drive you crazy, but you must resist the temptation to open the oven and peek. The reason this method works is because the initial high heat seers in the juices. The outside of your roast will be crispy and delicious. The inside will be tender and just plain good This year I decided I am not cooking, I have been having problems with my back and just am not feeling up to it so we are looking for some place that will have a good Christmas dinner or buffet. If anyone knows of any restaurants that will be doing that please post it. We used to go to a wonderful place about a mile from here but they have since changed owners and the new owners are not doing that. Someone told me Cracker Barrel does it??...See MoreFlamenco queen unfurls on New Year’s Day!
Comments (9)I consider "Flamenco Queen" a supreme accomplishment in modern Hippeastrum breeding. Hello JL, you will probably not appreciate and you will appreciate my Statement, that your flower above is far from showing up what this hybrid has to offer. It will only reveal this in the following Season, when the freshly potted bulb has been settled in. The floral segments will be much broader and more frilly, and the floret just opening can be shaped like a ball since the Segments are overlapping. I have one right now in Bloom. The net length of the scape is, go figure, 82 cm. There is Little left to improve in the shape of the Bloom. The depth of the Color is astounding, and I do not know of any TETraploid Hippeastrum = "typical DUTCH hybrid" AS densely spotted - and, in the DIPloid cohort, only "Exotic Star" and the species H.pardinum are a match in this respect. My Vision is a densely spotted Hippeastrum of the same stars-and-stripes type, but with a White midrib which is extended as in "Ambiance" or "Gilmar" Btw. I am yet to see any "Flamenco Queen" offered as cut flower. But I have seen literally 1000s of "ShowMaster" - their buds, the outside of the Segments that is, as densely spotted, and efficiently mimicking "Flamenco Queen" at this stage, I presume that the absence of Flamenco Queen on the flower-market is due to it conspicuously thinner scape which appears more likely to collapse. The scapes of "ShowMaster" on the other Hand are conspicuosly strong, and I have grown seed pods on them as cut flowers more than once....See Moreeld6161
