All of Dad's (and DH's) favourites. I also made oat cakes and toasted coconut marshmallows as gifts for my Dad. Will also give him a bottle of Bolla Valpollicella - his favourite wine. He is 85, so we try to stick with consumables when it comes to gift giving.

I love your menu, Jane. I would gladly eat it all and so would my Dad except for the asparagus. My Dad just turned 77 this week and we always combine Father's Day and his birthday celebration.
I am always lost as to what to give as a gift as he lives with us and needs/wants nothing. My brother always gives him the latest SEC/NFL football magazines and he absolutely cherishes those.

It is certainly hard to give a meaningful gift to older people. I always try to think of something that my Dad likes that Mom made or his Grandma or aunts made that he doesn't get any more, hence the oat cakes (thanks Grainlady) Of course with your Dad living with, it makes it really tough. I should take my own advice; I told my daughters what my DH would appreciate more than anything material, is a heartfelt card, lettin him know how much he means to them.

I'm hosting a brunch this year for the family and serving sausage links, scrambled eggs, home fries, french toast strips and fruit. Also toast and bagels and lemonade, iced tea and coffee! I have a tiny little house so it will be a buffet!

I don't know the menu; I've been assigned a salad (I'm making shrimp and crab salad) along with a cheesecake with raspberry topping. TIP: I slipped a baggy over my hand to press the cookie crust in the bottom of the pan.

Toby, DH would appreciate more than anything material, is a heartfelt card, letting him know how much he means to them. This is true--my DH's most treasured gift is a card that the grandbabies recorded for him singing Happy Birthday Pa. He even packs it so we can listen to it as we travel.

I'm doing brunch for our extended family. We'll have gravlox & bagels, rhubarb muffins, slow cooked pork back ribs, watermelon salad, with lemon-rhubarb cake roll for dessert. And I'm sure we'll also have rain....

I may add some pickled carrots to the pickle tray. I grabbed a jar today from the grocery and they are wonderful! Tillen Farms is the brand.

Cooksnsews, not sure where you live, but here on the west coast of B.C. it absolutely poured all day long - and tomorrow will be much the same - typical June. How do you make your watermelon salad?

We're keeping it simple - burgers, chicken, DH fell in love with Pioneer Woman's smashed potatoes. I'll make my new favorite black bean salad with roasted corn and mango. We'll have cut up fruit and veggies, and for dessert DH and I will work on a second rendition of Cooks Illustrated's Paris-Brest pastry. OMG that was sooooo good!

Father's Day is just like all other holidays for me; no plans.

I generally look at supermarket sales on the day and decide.

Well, my birthday falls on Father's Day this year, so we're doing a double "party"--grilled sesame-ginger chicken, grilled corn, grilled bread, green salad, and Riverrat's Lemon Buttermilk Cake with Strawberries. Yum!

Well I was going to have a pot roast and a new recipe, a Banana Cream Pie from a site I just found last night. It looks fabulous. BUUUTTT, as I just started heating the oven to stick the roast in, and was crunching the graham crackers for the pie, I heard a loud POP noise, and looked at the oven and saw it glowing red and sparks flying on the inside. Opened it up, and my element at the bottom of my oven was bright red and sparking, ready to catch fire. So we grilled out and had BBQ chicken, macaroni salad, garden salad, and green beans. And an ice cream cone from the freezer,lol. Oh well. It was good.

We had grilled tenderloin steaks with horseradish sauce, potatoes from the garden, black eye peas and squash relish, roasted peppers, onions, squash and zuchinni, tossed salad, stuffed celery and chocolate cream pie for dessert.

Mustangs, I always smash up the cookies inside a bag, so that's perfect.

I only had an hour to cook, so we had corn, taters, and skirt steak. Both the corn and potatoes were cooked in the microwave, then I rubbed the corn with Irish butter, mixed baked/chopped bacon and sour cream into the potato innards, and melted some cheese on top under the broiler. The skirt steak was super thin, so I seared that quickly. Dad liked everything! :-) We took our picnic to the park and even got to see a little of the Blue Angels airshow.

Hi tobyt! I guess all the rain fell on you left-coasters - our forecasters struck out and we had glorious sunshine and ate out on the deck.

My watermelon salad is roughly equal parts cubed watermelon and cucumber, dressed with olive oil, and lots of fresh ground black pepper. I added some chopped red onion today because I had some. Add crumbled feta, and toss.

Mmm that watermelon salad sounds like a great idea!

We had chips and salsa to begin along with grilled artichokes *(quartered and mostly steamed first, then marinated in a bit of EVOO & balsamic) and then cooked on the grill. DH & DSIL devoured them!
Main course was BBQ chicken on the grill and fresh salmon. Along with pan cooked quartered red potatoes with peppers and onions, corn on the cob ($.69 for white corn at the market) and watermelon. Dessert was from the bakery, I've lost my mojo since I don't eat wheat. Assorted pastries and happy face cookies completed the meal!

The rain disappeared for a couple of hours this afternoon and the sun came out, so I was able to finish the ribs on the barbeque. My dad just stuffed himself, which was a good thing to see - he ate like a 20 year old! Highlight for me was the rhubarb pie - used Madame Benoit's recipe for the filling and Nathan's pastry (from Canarybird.) This pastry never fails - I use half butter and half lard and I could eat the pastry all by itself. Best part was that my 16 year old DD expressed interest in following and helping step by step as, in her words "probably not too many girls these days know how to make a pie - and I want to learn how." Great day all in all.

Oh, it was fun to cook today. I made salmon burgers(the store made them and I grilled them) turkey burgers (same as salmon burgers), and beefburgers( same as salmon burgers). I grilled potatoes after nuke-ing them, grilled eggplant, red/yellow peppers and zucchini, quinoa and raisins, white rice (untouched), corn (forgot to serve), store bought french bread (too hot for oven), and teriyaki chicken breasts, grilled. I am still smiling after such a nice, nice day.

We didn't even have a Father's Day dinner, Elery had to leave here at 9 am yesterday because he worked yesterday afternoon. My own father and stepfather passed away about a month apart, 4 years ago. I have no living uncles left either.

Elery says my family is really hard on men, LOL.
