Hello out there. Tell me what your menu is for New Year's Day.

We're having a quiet holiday - in the middle of a snowstorm right now - just 2 of us...

- brunch will be waffles and bacon with maple syrup - forgot the champagne but remembered the OJ so we might be having screwdrivers with brunch

- dinner will be AnnT's Tourtiere - I'll try to force my husband to have a veggie or salad on the side but he'll probably eat his half of the pie all at one sitting!

I am heading to a potluck party.

If the food is all from the Costco freezer case ;), I can always just eat my own food (Ann's Crab Stuffed Endive) and drink my own wine!

Angelaid, I love potato pancakes but I would say that is is my favourite version. There is no secret to making these pancakes. I've made them with mashed potatoes that I made specifically for making these pancakes and I've also made extra mashed potatoes for dinner and saved the leftovers for these pancakes. When I make them with the leftover mashed potatoes there is also butter in the mix. This is not a stiff or thick batter. I use a 1/4 cup measuring cup to scoop up the batter. Mere Blanc's Potato Pancakes From:www.thedailyspud.com with very minor changes. 2 small baking potatoes 1/4 cup milk 1/3 cup All-Purpose flour 2 eggs, separated 1-1/2 tablespoons heavy cream Pinch of salt Pepper Fresh chives (or green onions) Butter for frying Cook potatoes until tender Mash with a little milk. Let potatoes cool before adding the remaining milk, cream, flour, egg yolks, salt, pepper and chives. Beat Egg Whites until stiff. Fold into potato mixture. Do not over mix. This is a light but thick batter. Heat a griddle or skillet. ( I used a rectangle electric frying pan) . Brush with butter. Using a 1/4 cup measuring cup drop batter on to griddle. When you say "rich tomato basil soup" do you mean rich with cream? or only with flavor? How about roasted veggies...red and green peppers, chunks of sweet onion maybe chunks of eggplant maybe zucchini, and a few asparagus spears for good measure..slices of baby bella 'shrooms...toss with EVOO, some Kosher salt...a bit of garlic ( if there is not a lot in other dishes) a bit of sugar, balsamic...and oregano...or parsley or rosemary or any herb that blows your dress up. How about a side of mushroom risotto....? Oven roasted potatoes are always wonderful.....and can go into the oven before the meat. If your soup is broth based....how about that spinach dish ( the name escapes me!!) spinach, cream, lots of fresh grated parm....bread crumbs and baked...has a woman's name!! AARGH it's hell to get old! Peas in a little butter, oregano tarragon sauce....thickened just a tiny bit with corn starch....neeed a recipe....give a shout. What are you saucing the beef with?....could I suggest a blue cheese/walnut sherry sauce?? Linda C

Kelly, of course fresh black-eyed peas are better, like any bean/veggie is. But the Ranch Style peas are excellent. They're not a bean that's hard to like. I cook both fresh and use canned when I don't have time to simmer a pot all day. We have a fresh hamhock in the freezer that I'm saving for ham and pinto beans. Yum!

We will head south on Wednesday. Probably come home on Sunday. Then again we may stay longer. We never know once we get there. I will take my sewing machine and do some sewing for the grandaughters for summer. Never to early to get started. Happy New Years to all. Stay safe in your travels... Susie

Seagrass, if you're in the middle of a snowstorm I don't guess there's any point in asking if I could join you. Sounds so good. I may get up the nerve to try to make Ann T's Tourtiere one of these days. I don't have a lot of confidence making things with crusts. This forum has helped me so much in other ways, maybe it'll happen. Everyone is so encouraging. Anyway, thanks and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

It's considered good luck to eat black eyed peas on New Year's Day. We tend to have some with ham, rice, collard greens, cornbread.

Pork Tenderloin, sauerkraut, peas are the basic's. Just us so I don't intend to get too involved.....

Shhhhhhhhhh - don't tell Ann - I buy the crust...maybe at some higher point of enlightenment I'll come to embrace the the flour-lard-butter thing.

We have to have some pork, blackeyes and cabbage. This year we're having a nice boneless loin pork roast, blackeyes with some rice on the side, steamed cabbage and as is Christy's family tradition; macaroni and cheese. Christys father always made a lemon meringue pie so I'll make that for her. After all the pecan pies I've made for other people I never got around to making one for us so I'll throw one in the oven tomorrow too.

We are having a few neighbours over for dinner.

Ham is on the menu along with a potato gratin, fresh green beans, and I was going to do squash, but Moe requested sweet potatoes with caramelized onions. Dessert is a white chocolate cheesecake.

I was thinking of doing Sharon's stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer, but I've decided to be lazy and skip the appetizers.

Sauerbraten, red cabbage w/apples & onions, mashed potatoes w/gravy from the sauerbraten, fresh green beans w/bacon, & Dutch apple pie for dessert.

Dinner will be later this evening so about 1:00 p.m. I'm putting out appetizers of crispy mini-lobster tacos w/fresh salsa & a fresh fruit/cheese platter. I wouldn't normally do the lobsta w/sauerbraten later but our guests expect some form of lobsta when coming to New England.

Malna, are you in Pennsylvania Dutch country too?
I think I'm the only one around here who never does the pork & sauerkraut on New Year's Day thing. I never even heard of it growing up, but it seems very big now.
I'm going to make a lovely Italian veal stew with rosemary, white wine, and tomatoes.
