Leaking Hose End

I have a hose reel that's probably a decade old. Recently, I noticed the leader hose was leaking (spraying, actually) water at the point where the hose connector meets the hose itself. (Not at the point where the hose connects to the hose bib, but where the spinning metal connection end of the hose meets the metal end of the hose itself. See photo.)

My first attempt at fixing the leak was to replace the washers inside the end of the hose, but that didn't work. Thinking it was an old hose, I replaced it, but water leaked from the exact same spot in the new hose! I'm not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

If 2 hoses are leaking at the same area, one would think that the bib threads may have a burr or? so that the hose isn't threading on far enough. An extra washer or may be a pliers to help tighten?

I would get the thick brass connectors and use metal strap clamps. even with the metal strap clamps you still have to periodiclly retighten. Regardless of the type of hose they work loose. I used RTV or super glue with some sucess at the joints and on the screw threads. IMO the plastic ones arn't worth a dare.

Try another washer. The male hose end on the barrel might be on the short side, not giving a good tightening on the female end of the hose.

Just cut the pipe and replace the faucet; there's a split in the pipe around 2" to 3" inside the wall. That wire you see is a ground wire back to the panel.

It's difficult to be courageous enough to comment when the person asking for help says "don't bother suggesting x, y, and z." We don't know which "trick" you might have missed. So, here are a few of my thoughts after dealing with similar issues: - leaking timers - For several consecutive years while using the same brand which had been reliable for me, the timer would blow apart at the first "turn on." And that with the correct pressure reducer in place. Also while cautiously opening the spigot only a smidge. My remedy was to return the item asap and ask for a replacement. Every time. - leaking connectors - I had problems connecting plastics with metals. I now use plumber's tape at every connection. - Always use the same brand throughout the system. A 1/4-inch tube for one brand isn't necessarily the same as a different brand's 1/4-inch. Don't know why, but it's not. -- I found that the "ring" washers worked better than the flat style. Tired to replace them yearly (when I lived in SoCal; here, in Oregon, I change them out every several years. If any topics not mentioned? Please specify/ask. edit: I don't use a "hose end timer;" I only it at the spigot.

Have you tried it on a
different faucet or tighter as mentioned?

Personally, I'd either replace the fitting or replace that length of hose altogether. Maybe I'm just lazy...

Thanks for the replies here. I took longer_gw's suggestion and lugged the hose reel to the front yard and tried it there. The leak was present there too! In all my days, I've never had a hose leak at that spot, let alone two, one right after the other. Very strange. I bought a brand new length of hose reel and installed it, and voila! The leak is gone.

I did have some trouble with the other end that attaches to the hose reel itself. It's non-threaded and attached via a hose clamp. Water was spraying out the sides of the hose no matter how tightly I had the hose clamp. I wrapped the male piece of plastic that the hose is squeezed on to with teflon tape, and at least for the moment, it seems to be pretty leak-free.

Had the hoses been on during a freeze? Did you ever look close inside the hoses’
connections? I usually add connections
when needed (using regular stainless hose clamps) for various reasons and never
had the problem. If you have time, cut and
remove the ext brass away to exam the internal brass and hose. Usually a diagonal Hacksaw cut on the Ext
Brass and Needle Nose Pliers will get the job done. Then you can add a new end
to have a 2nd hose.
