DFW fruit trees?
Comments (10)Gala Apple Tree I planted a Gala apple tree (bot from Mikes garden ctr.) about 6 ft tall in Sep 2008. In the spring of 2009 the tree came alive with lots of leaves and new branches. Had about 30-40 flowers but only 1 turned into apple about 1 inch diameter, and turned brown and rotted. It didn't make it. Then I read some where that Apple trees need another variety for pollination. I didn't have any plans to plant another Apple tree. Any way this year there have been lots of blooms and just looked today and there are about 30 of them that are little tiny green rounds.... I was so delighted that i could get see some fruits with out a pollinator. I did see some small tiny bugs in the leaves and sprayed them with 6-7 drops of palmolive kitchen liquid soap + plus water and sprayed about 2 weeks back. The critters disappeared and I again started seeing some after the rains but not a whole lot. When the sun comes I may spray again in another day or too. Does any one have experience growing apples.... what fertilizer to use, and any safe insecticide... and of course to prevent squirrels from getting to it. I never had any squirrels in my yard for 20 yrs and in the last 2/3 yrs, I see 2 or 3 roaming around my back yard and really worried about them messing with my apples and my veggie garden. Veggies I grow: Been growing veggies for the last 22 years. Long japanese egg plants, Okra, Cucumbers (regular American and another variety called Armenian Cucumber, bell peppers, Banana peppers, Italian beans and some asian gourd varieties. Never successful with Tomatoes except the first year. For the veg garden I just throw the Kitchen veg peel scraps etc. Any comments to improve my Apple tree yield / pest control or other comments very Welcome....See MoreWe Made It...Finally
Comments (16)My son and his family left Pgh., for Dallas this evening at 6:30...I'm hoping they don't have any problems, it's the 1st time my DDIL has flown...I did tell her to get a glass of wine... Last month, my DH had a 6:45 AM flight to join me in Ft. Myers. His plane had to be de-iced twice, then refueled and didn't take off until almost 10:00, which meant he missed his connecting flight in Atlanta...I'm at the airport in Ft. Myers and no hubby...Knowing he doesn't really know his way around airports, I started to panic...Finally at the ticket desk, a very nice lady, checked and found him on a later flight...By the time he got to Florida, he was a wee bit tired, to say the least....I've been so very lucky in all the times I've flown, no lost luggage, no real delays but I have a feeling, one of these times...... So glad you got to your destination, enjoy your trip and safe travels home.......See MoreJenn O's pool build - DFW area
Comments (87)Thank you so much Jenn. My wife gets all the credit for the pool design. I just had few ideas and she pulled it all together. We started with a couple of designs from PBs but then we kept wanting to change this and that to see what it would look like. So we got our own software and my wife created at least 50 different versions of our pool. The final PB plan started from our plan and they made some recommendations based on their expertise of designing pools. Our tanning ledge will only have partial flagstone around the area that will be out of the water. We wanted the beach entry for our babies - 2 tiny toy poodles. There's no way they'd be jumping into a foot of water. Let's just hope they learn to use the beach entry. I'm looking most forward to the tanning ledge. It just seems like the best area to lounge around in. Glad to hear no birds have paid you a visit. We used to have a koi pond by our patio and birds would come. But then again, we used to have 4 trees in our backyard that have since been cleared. So yes, time will tell. Otherwise I'll have to find creative ways to scare away the birds....See MoreFinally - Floors In! - What kind of rugs in kitchen
Comments (20)Wow, I was thrilled to find this thread. We have just refinished our hardwood floors, and after the cost and what we went through to get them refinished, I am determined to keep them looking new! We raised 3 boys on them and they were pretty beat up, particularly in front of the refrigerator with water damage. Now, I am contemplating what, if any, rug I might place in the kitchen. I'm thinking a runner at the sink/prep area, and a 2x3 in front of the fridge. I'm interested in the comment by one that the floor/finish is not showing wear and tear after 7 years - I would hope for that! If I get a rug, I want something easy to clean/throw in the wash or hose off. Has anyone used polypropylene on hardwood? Crate & Barrel has some indoor/outdoor rugs made of that in a neutral color, I just want to be certain that product wouldn't scratch the floor. I tend to be an all natural gal though, cotton and wool. I would prefer to have nothing, if I felt certain the prep area wouldn't show wear. I'm thinking all cotton, with no pad or backing, is a good choice to try, throw in the wash, and if I don't like it I'll go back to nothing. I wanted to comment on rugs placed for comfort - I have always worn house shoes with great support for long hours in the kitchen, which are far better than any rug/gel rug can provide. Back in the day it was Birkenstocks, but a few years ago I discovered Fit Flops, and they are the best!! Got that cushy support under your feet with every step. :-)...See More- 10 years ago
