leakproof tree stand

I have a large, pretty easy to use stand for my xmas tree, but I always fret about spilling water on my hardwood floors when watering it. And, in the past, it has dripped when filling and left a spot on the hardwoods. I've had the floors refinished with a Swedish finish since then, but I still worry.

Today, as I was setting up the tree, I noticed a water heater pan that I had in the garage. It's black plastic and goes under a hot water heater to catch small drips, should it leak. My stand fits in it perfectly, it's light and was easy to move/twirl the tree to the best position. I also put a rubber backed throw rug under the whole affair, just because the rug made it easy to slide the pan around (but not too easy). I'll cover it all with my tree skirt.

Hopefully, someone else will find this helpful. The pan was not expensive. I put a cork in the hole or you could duct tape over it, but I don't expect the water to ever reach that point.

My problem this year was wicking. Never had that happen before. I have a towel under the stand and one that goes around the tree & stand topped with a skirt. When I added water one morning I didn't realize the top towel had dipped into the water. Not enough to make a real mess, but the next day I had to replace both towels. Fortunately our tree is small this year and dh was home to lift it while I replaced the base towel.

That is a good idea - we have an extra one of those in our storage room - it's metal which is probably a good idea since our tree stand is really heavy.

If you do decide to wait, hopefully the peaches set and you can taste a few to see if it is worth it. A pit derived peach (seedling) is supposedly unlikely to give a good peach (that would be a rare thing likely worth preserving). But here is an opportunity to find out and then decide just before bud swell late winter if it is worth moving. I hope you get a winner and one with unique taste and properties...that I hope will be worth propagating down the road. Document and photograph the fruit if it turns out good. Of course if you wait the tree will be even bigger with summer growth by then (see fruitnut's comment on summer pruning of new wood). On a peach you shouldn't cut anything off if you want to have hope of regeneration- which is highly unlikely if there are now no leaves on the tree. If there is any hope it will probably send out some new growth in the next few weeks, but peaches don't reliably send out new buds from old wood. Peach trees have a short lifespan compared to other fruit trees- some varieties shorter than others and soil type and climate also factor in but it sounds like this peach tree was on last legs and its time to plant another.

I had the Swivel Stand and loved it. When we moved I asked all the kids if anyone wanted it. None did,so I donated it. This year DS#1 and wife decided to go with a real tree and he ordered the Swivel Stand on line. One other thing you might want to consider is the Tree Stand Tray. Menard's carries them in stock or you can get one from Amazon. DS had to order one of them too! It is a life saver if someone over waters the tree! They make trays for just that purpose. I am the proud owner of one after discovering huge water stains in the hardwood floor after taking down the tree one year. It is also awesome because you can easily slide the tree around during and after decorating -- we slide it to the middle of the room to string lights and garland then slide it back into the corner when finished.

Who knew? I never even thought to look for one, but was just stressing out so much about getting the tree put up and not leaking on the floor when I water it - like I do every year. I feel so much less stress! If this one gives out (I use it for an emergency bird bath in sub freezing weather when the drip in my other one freezes up), I think I'll get a resin one.

a drip pan is a great idea!

I have a couple of towels under ours in case there is overflow plus have used them in the past to help position the tree... our tree stand has a 'reservoir' around it that will catch probably up to ~1 1/2 cups of overflow... sometimes water does trickle out of the upper screw holes... over the years I have learned how high I should fill it everyday, but have definitely had spills, but in the past couple of houses, we have put the tree stand on top of the rug, so that helps to further protect floors!
