Back to GW and need some countertop advice

Hello again to all. I haven't been here for a while. After renovating a kitchen and two baths, I thought I would be done but I just bought a country house and need to redo the master bathroom. I am cheating a bit because I have a bathroom question, but there is more activity on this board.

I have attached one of the listing photos which is a pretty good representation of what one side of the room looks like now, although the wood is not quite so yellow. I want to retain the rustic feel and I really do love the wood of the vanity and the front of the tub. But the rest of the room doesn't speak to me.

I am thinking California Gold slate for the floor (in at least a 12 x 12) and the tub deck and California Gold brick in the shower. What I don't know is what to do on the countertops. Would you go with something dark like soapstone or light? And if light, what would you do? I am stuck and having trouble visualizing.

ID consider actual large format slate slab tiles for the floor, and either slate or soapstone for the counter and tub deck. Don't choose too many different materials. Simple and rustic go well together. And I don't think picking up the gold color anywhere else is going to improve the look of the room...unless you really want gold slate in the shower....

Thanks EAM. I am considering just the one material--California Gold slate. Just changing the format in the shower. So you think that a dark counter goes better than a light one? Like a light limestone? I just can't decide whether dark or light is better.

OOh very pretty!!!! I'll tell you what worked for me. I went to a granite yard, looked around and asked them who they recommended as a fabricator. I should have seen the answer coming when the owner told me, "Well, we have a lot of guys who are all very good," and shoved a dozen or so cards at me. I pushed him a little and realized he wasn't going to recommend anyone because he had a business relationship with all of them and didn't want to be seen as playing favorites. So I went up there 3 or 4 more times, always made myself very visible and always chatted with the owner a bit. After we built a bit of a relationship, I finally got him to divulge the name of the place he really liked, who did the owner's home... And they did a fantastic job!

I think we are moving in the direction to do the island, perimeter counters and backs splash (all the way up the wall) in the same White Santorini Quartzite. Any feedback on this? Im sensitive to adding too many different materials into the mix. Is this too much of one thing?

We raised all our counters (kitchen and bathrooms) by 3" for our tall family. It's so much easier on my back when I'm making a big meal (eg holidays) and my son (6'6") and daughter (6'1") especially love their bathrooms. We did custom cabinets so we didn't just raise the toe kick or use a crown under the counter; we have larger cabinets so we have a bit more storage. The DW sits on a small platform, which is hidden by the toe kick. I've never been one to think too much about resale, because you can't second guess what someone else will want. However, now that my house is on the market I'm getting some pushback that some people don't like the high counters (esp. in the kids' bathrooms.) I've had 12 good years with my high counters so I'd do it again but wanted to tell you what I'm hearing. (To be honest I'm surprised because my grandma had standard counters and never complained, and she was 4'11"! I'm 5'11" and only raised mine by 3" to 39"; most people are taller than my grandma was so I feel like the counters should be fine for almost anyone.)

Counter Top Miele 5300 coffee machine - advice/feedback

Jborge: how are you liking your CM5300? We bought one 3 months ago or so. We have a Miele Dishwasher and stove about 20 years almost trouble free (knock on wood), so we love the brand. I'm retired, so have time for the CM5300 maintenance. I sent it back for repair due to inconsistent milk quantity and frequent issues with the right side milk spout not working. Just got it back yesterday. I think some of the issues relate to maintenance with the milk pipe; not sure whether the "repair" center addressed those. I think you have to Rinse the milk pipe every day (start and finish) you drink a milk drink and Clean it weekly. What beans do you use? When the CM5300 works, which is almost all of the time, it is heaven.

I guess I'm saying I don't love the look of cherry cabs with golden slate. If you do that's great, but google images of it first. Here is a kitchen with that combo. I think it's ghastly....you may love it. To me it looks like a jeans suit. Contrast between the cabs and floor, cabs and counters, just enough to draw your eye, makes for a much more harmonious space in my opinion.

the issue with going light for the counter tops is that other than Thassos marble (that I wouldn't recommend here - or any marble in your space) there aren't any light stones that really aren't yellow too, or slightly pink. Including limestone. If you love the material, choose limestone for the floor and counters. But if you're sticking with the golden slate from the golden state... I'd probably go dark if only to have it look less busy.
