Is Marie Pavie a poly-tea?

In another thread, some contributors have used the term poly-tea. I am wondering if Marie Pavie belongs in this category. More specifically, I am curious if Marie Pavie tolerates slightly alkaline soil. According to some sources it does, while others suggest that it doesn't. Is this one of the polyanthas that does well in CA or should it be avoided?

I'll copy and paste what I replied on your other thread:

I don't know what your soil/water
conditions are, but for me both Marie Pavie and Marie Daly tend to get
chlorosis unless I give them acidic fertilizer. Cecile Brunner, on the
other hand, doesn't have that problem.

I'm also more partial to Cecile because I think the flowers are
prettier, and they drop their petals when they're done. So you don't
get those dried brown blobs.

Marie Pavie grows and flowers well on my clay soil. In your area of the world I would plant her with no afternoon sun as the petals are thin. We get a lot of rain and the flowers don't go brown, they just quickly drop their petals. Mine is budded on multiflora.

My guess is that Burlington hers from Vintage. They do trade plants; I believe that most of the own root nurseries do cooperate with each other. She has a large collection of Geschwind ramblers; the only place that could have come from, I think, is from Cliff Orent's nursery. Heirloom and Vintage both got Cliff's roses, Rogue Valley got Ashdown's stock. Connie's roses came from many places, but at least in part from Vintage, I'm sure. It's not a war with each other. The guy that owns Petals of the Past in Birmingham told me that he gets his own root old roses from Chamblees, because he said that no one propagates as well as Chamblees does. The mystery red climber that Petals carries was given to them by Ruth Knopf who got it from Malcolm Manners. Ramblers that Vintage carries, some of them, anyway, came from a lady in Washington State, Anne Belovich. Who has donated rambler cuttings to that nursery in Spokane as well as the gardens in Chambersville, Texas. We all just need to do our part and not rag on one nursery or another but list our gardens, buy and grow what we can and like so many said on Kim's thread, share, learn to propagate and give roses away to our friends. Plant them someplace, propagate for our rose groups. Jeez, I hate it when I preach. You all know what I mean.

Thank you all very much. Patricia, I'm happy to hear she grows out of it for you. I will do as you say and give her a boost. It's been in the mid to upper 80s here and about 60 or just under at night with NO rain - and none to speak of expected until June. It's reasonable that she's a little weaker after her bloom. She's had plenty of watering. It's interesting how I'm seeing that generally that seems to be the case with the roses I have. They're either getting ready to grow or just bloomed, cycling through. To my mind, BS looked at that way doesn't seem as bad. It's a by-product of growth - at least with the Teas, Chinas & Noisettes and, I guess, some other heat loving roses. Looking at it that way prevents me from panicking and saves the lives of many roses who don't know any better. Thanks again. Sherry

I bought 2 Marie Pavies and 2 Marie Daleys from ARE and planted them around the end of Dec, 2007. MP got bigger - easily twice as big. Neither did well here from the beginning IMHO, but MP has done better. MD's color was pink in the bud, barely pink upon opening, and whitish thereafter. Very little difference from MP. They both have suffered from tan leaves, not exactly BS, but sickly looking and very little blooming through the summer. I tried to move the MDs to pots, but they croaked in short order. Maybe my thumbs aren't as green as they need to be. The weather is becoming cooler, and it shows. MP has more flowers, bigger leaves - though still a good many tan leaves. I'm not real pleased with them, but they are young. My opinion of the EarthKind rating is that it may be irrelevant in humid conditions - which much of Texas is not. We'll see now that our humidity is about to break how MP does, but we will never have 10 or 20 percent humidity in Florida! All of this that I have described may be summer dormancy, too. Most everything in my garden (Teas, HMs, GaA & even Chinas - except Monsieur Tillier) dropped their leaves and stayed bare for more than a month in August & September. I am really hoping that with maturity will come the ability to handle the heat better. But back to Marie Daley...I was unimpressed. Sherry

Marie Pavie new growth ??maybe problem

Ever since I pulled out a rose with DEFINITE symptoms -- 'Yellow Sweetheart, Climbing' showing red new growth is fine, but when that new growth is suddenly STUDDED with prickles, you know something's terribly wrong, because this rose is "thornless" -- I examine my roses pretty much daily. When I see growth like this, I mentally imagine taking a picture in B&W -- does it still look weird? Are the leaves taking on normal shape? It still freaks me out, knowing RRD is in my area. I think it's inevitable that it'll hit me again. But when I see "not obviously RRD" new growth like this, I wait a few days to see if it greens up. So far this year, it all has, or is about to. Another thing I am noticing this year -- many cases of multiple shoots coming from the same area. Why am I not freaking out about this? Because what is coming out looks normal, albeit "enthusiastic". Generally, the first bud to emerge is the central bud -- the two side buds are "suppressed" by the central bud being in an active growth phase. But then we had that week of nights dipping into the mid 20s after over a month's worth of leafing out. Many of those central buds were damaged -- some growth even melted away entirely. That meant the side buds were no longer being 'suppressed", and they started to grow. In some cases, the central bud's growth recovered, and the resulting "three shoots from one point" looks scary now. But as I said, the shoots coming out look normal -- it's just that there are more than the "normal number" because of that late freeze. :-) ~Christopher

On the other hand, my soil is alkaline (about pH 8) and I don't see much cholorisis with Marie Pavié. Maybe a little now and then, but nothing anywhere like own-root rugosas, some hybrid multiflora ramblers, or some of the more sensitive hybrid perpetuals such as Reine des Violettes.

I have grown MP for about 18 years (2 own root plants from Chamblees) and it remains robust, healthy, and floriferous.

Marie Pavie did quite well in my garden and had no chlorosis; unfortunately she did get canker as did many other roses which I now attribute to the drought. I just planted another band since I like this little rose and the other one never had any kind of disease except for the canker at the end.

According to Vintage Gardens last catalogue it is classified as a polyantha & Gregg characterises it as perfect. I agree, I have grown 3 for the last 5 years trouble-free, always in bloom, right now 2 of them are covered with buds, the other one has kindly been pruned by my citified deer. They easily jump (or walk over my picket fence)but are not much of a nuisance. My soil is acid clay which I have amended with my compost & sundry mulches etc. The plants have a beautiful shape without much help from me.Very healthy here where blackspot is usually a problem. Hope my rambling is of some value.
