So far, it looks normal to me. Mine has new growth which looks like that as well. One thing I try to remember when I see new growth which makes me worry about RRD is to imagine seeing it in black-and-white, thus ignoring color. If it still seems normal, it probably is.

Thanks for the informaiton. I sure like this rose and would hate to loose it. I will just keep watching for awhile. About 3 years ago I lost a lot of roses to RRV in zone 6 KY

It looks normal to me too, that's what the new growth on my MP looks like.

Would you mind a few questions? While I'm not saying that the stem it self is that odd those buds should not be there very odd. So have you looked down to where the stem is coming from? Is it a normal size? What do the thorns look like? Is the stem bendable with a sight touch? How long is the stem and has it begun to green a bit? Once again those buds should not be there yet. To barrow a phrase from Ann watch it like a cat at her favorite mouse hole.

I look every morning. I can not see the bottom where the stem starts unless I do some trimming. There are not any thorns. I will look tomorrow to see it is has a bit of green or if the stem is soft to bend. We are having more rain today. We have had lots of rain this spring and a hail storm.

I'll look forward to your update. Remember from what I can see it's not that odd. The buds early formation is scary thou. Roses like babies follow a certain developmental path.

Thats very good to hear Christopher. I used to have many polyanthas but only 2 ever grew well here. Those 2 I still have. I bet Brooks is very happy to hear the news on the buds. Thank you so much for adding that.

If you don't mind my sharing one of mine. I know that this cane coming on is going to be fine. This rose is South Africa. I other rose that do this as well. But every time I see it I keep an eye on it until it shows normal coloring. You can't see this in the photo but it's covered with a hundred soft bendable thorns. I have several Kordes roses that start this way.

Ever since I pulled out a rose with DEFINITE symptoms -- 'Yellow Sweetheart, Climbing' showing red new growth is fine, but when that new growth is suddenly STUDDED with prickles, you know something's terribly wrong, because this rose is "thornless" -- I examine my roses pretty much daily. When I see growth like this, I mentally imagine taking a picture in B&W -- does it still look weird? Are the leaves taking on normal shape?

It still freaks me out, knowing RRD is in my area. I think it's inevitable that it'll hit me again. But when I see "not obviously RRD" new growth like this, I wait a few days to see if it greens up. So far this year, it all has, or is about to.

Another thing I am noticing this year -- many cases of multiple shoots coming from the same area. Why am I not freaking out about this? Because what is coming out looks normal, albeit "enthusiastic". Generally, the first bud to emerge is the central bud -- the two side buds are "suppressed" by the central bud being in an active growth phase. But then we had that week of nights dipping into the mid 20s after over a month's worth of leafing out. Many of those central buds were damaged -- some growth even melted away entirely. That meant the side buds were no longer being 'suppressed", and they started to grow. In some cases, the central bud's growth recovered, and the resulting "three shoots from one point" looks scary now. But as I said, the shoots coming out look normal -- it's just that there are more than the "normal number" because of that late freeze.

I checked the bud on the stem on Marie Pavie today and the buds are turning green. I will keep checking for awhile but maybe it will be all right

I'm very happy to hear this and equally please to learn something new. As it turns out I have a rose that does the same thing. Flamenco Rosita looks exactly as yours does.

I will try to take another picture tomorrow.
